Hey hgfr,
I want to take a second to thank you for your responses. They're very well put together and easy to follow. 🙂
The GPU you want to uninstall is the display adapter controlling the HDMI audio. This is the AMD Radeon HD 6370M or 6550M in your notebook. It wouldn't hurt to uninstall the ATI High Definition Audio Device.
Run the installer again after removing those and let me know if it still errors out. The installer should replace the GPU but may fail to replace the Audio Device as we've seen it do already.
The installer method in Device Manager should work for the audio device by pointing to any of the .inf files in the following folder: C:\SwSetup\sp50640\Packages\Drivers\WDM\HDMI\W764a\ Note this one is for the 64-bit operating system specifically.
Let me know if that works. 🙂

Dear GDT,
Aw shucks, flattery will get you everywhere with me!
Actually the display adapter is said to be a Mobility Radeon HD 5650. Does that make any difference?
Doubtless the next is a silly question; but if I uninstall it, how will I be able to see anything on the screen to then install anything?

Hey hgfr,
That's very strange. When I look at the driver download page for your notebook it shows the drivers for the 6000 series AMD GPU's but not the 5000 series chips... Puzzling, but does explain the errors we've been getting.
So I did some digging and found these drivers: AMD High-Definition Graphics Driver. They're for the ENVY line of notebooks but uses the same GPU and Intel combo.
Also, not a silly question. There are generic drivers that will still allow you to view the display that Windows will automatically put in place when you've removed the Intel drivers.
Let me know if that works. 🙂

Dear GDT,
Here is where I am up to:
1. I downloaded the software for the 5000 series as per your post 09-05-2014 10:14 AM. The extracted files did not include a file Autoruns.inf.
2. I first ran that software without uninstalling anything. It crashed, leaving a black screen which required a forced hard shut down.
3. After restarting I uninstalled the display adapter and the HD audio device as per your posts 09-04-2014 09:47 AM and 09-03-2014 09:39 AM.
4. Without rebooting, I again ran the downloaded software for the 5000 series. It worked! It completed I think without any errors. However the new drivers did not start running automatically and I still had the awful screen (reminiscent of the safe mode screen).
5. I rebooted. The display adapter and driver installed during this process. A dialogue box opened with "Please install ATI driver". The screen returned to normal.
6. I opened device manager intending to point to one of the inf files as per your post 09-04-2014 09:47 AM, but the ATI High Definition Audio Device was not there. Having been uninstalled it did not automatically reinstall.
How do I get it back please?

Hey hgfr,
Does the "Please install ATI driver" pop up every time you startup?
I think the safest bet here is to use the HP Support Assistant to search for missing drivers and see what happens.
Also, is sound and everything working like normal now (other than the popup)?

Dear GDT,
1. Neither of the two messages "Installing device driver software" and "Device driver software was not successfully installed" now appears.
2. What drivers should I be searching for and where (my computer or the internet)?
3. Sound is no different from what it always has been to my ear, but as I am both tone deaf and hard of hearing, I am an unreliable reporter.
4. What can I do about the missing device?

Hey hgfr,
I'll need you to clarify which device is missing.
Are there devices in the Unknown Devices field or is it that the ATI Audio Device is no longer listed in Device Manager? If it's that the ATI device is no longer there that's a good thing. The device is coupled with the ATI GPU and should not be listed as an independent device. Which I believe was the issue in the first place, hence my previous question if the sound was working as normal.
If there's an unknown device or a device you're sure should be there let me know and I'll try to find a driver for you. 🙂

Dear GDT,
It was indeed the ATI audio device that I referred to.
I'm a bit surprised to learn that it should not have appeared listed as an independent device. How did it get to appear? What did removing it do - did it affect the coupled device?
I thought I needed it to enable the computer to connect to a TV monitor via the HDMI port (see my post of 08-29-2014). Isn't that why we did not disable it back then?
Will the coupled device give this functionality?
Thanks.

Hey hgfr,
The ATI Audio Device is the ATI GPU. It's the same piece of hardware and uses the same driver set so it should only be listed as one device. I have a few notebooks here that have switchable graphics and the only audio devices showing is the IDT audio codecs for beats audio in certain models. The coupled device should give full functionality.
Test the HDMI audio and make sure it's still working. If it is, I think the issue may be resolved. 🙂
