Here's the way I managed to fix the problem:
1. Unplug the AC Adapter
2. Turn the computer off
3. Remove the battery
4. Keep pressing the power button for about a minute. This will (to my mind) drain all the remaining charge from the computer
5. Make sure the cords are clean, then connect the AC Adapter
6. Start the computer
7. Go to the 'Device Manager'
8. Under the Batteries section you will find 'Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery'
9. Right click on it and press the Uninstall button
10. Get a nice cup of coffee (it will take 3-4 minutes), then go back to your computer
11. Connect the battery
12. In 'Device Manager', right click on your username (at the top of the list) and then 'Scan for Hardware Changes'.
13. Wait about a minute
14. Watch how the battery start to charge
15. Enjoy your coffee

This just started happening with my laptop. I thought I damaged my relatively new battery by leaving the laptop plugged in overnight, but Batteries Plus tested the battery as very good. Other posts led me to check the power settings. I noticed that the plugged in screen brightness was at maximum brightness and the battery brightness was slightly at the halfway mark in the HP recommended setting. When I began to charge my laptop this morning, (after about 90 minutes of use), I noticed the change in brightness from from a lesser brightness to very bright. Once again, the task bar icon indicated the laptop was plugged in but not charging. I lowered the brightness slightly with the F7 key and then the icon indicated a charging laptop! From another post, I am led to believe that a very warm laptop combined with a higher brightness setting increases the amount of heat in the laptop (which was noticeable), thus keeping the battery from charging, for safety. Hopefully, a lower than maximum brightness in the ac power mode will let the battery charge every time it's plugged in.

I put a replacement battery in my computer this morning. It fully charged. When I discounted the AC adapter and brought it home and left it in the bag for an hour, it went down to 95%. I plugged it in. It says it's not charging.
Is the not charging due to preventing it from overcharging or is something wrong?

Hi Rojodi,
Sorry to hear that the new battery doesn't appear to be charging. I will be happy to help you. Let me start by getting some more information. What is your product number and operating system?
Find your product number on a notebook:
http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00033108
Finding your OS:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-CA/windows/which-operating-system
I also have a link for you to try to get the battery charging properly. Click on the link below and do the steps listed there.

Let me know how it goes,

On one hand, thanks - for it worked first time round
On another hand - any other tips? For it did charge for a couple of days and then it is all over again (luckily, at 96% of battery life atm, but anyway :)) - and the same trick did not solve it second time
Thanks in advance
(system is windows 8 in my case)

Hi George_Lashkni,
Those are the extent of the tips other then trying a hard reset. You can do that by removing both the battery and the power cord. With them removed hold down the power button for 30 seconds that will remove any excess energy in the system. Then plug in the power cord first and then reinsert the battery.
You can also check the hardware to make sure it is working properly but using the link below. You will want to run the Battery test under Component tests.
