I have an hp dv5t-1200se since 2009. When I turned on my computer this morning, I noticed a black bar (approx. 2.5 inches thick) on the right side of my screen. I also have part of my top screen showing up on the bottom screen. The bar for the bottom screen is approximately 3/4 inch thick. I have searched different forums online with several people experiencing the same problem. I have tried adjusting the screen resolution, and it seems to already be on the highest setting. I have also made sure that my computer has all the latest updates. Any help with resolving this issue is greatly appreciated.

Were the latest updates checked from HP or from the individual component manufacturer where available? For example, AMD was checked for a new video driver.
Does the behavior exist in safe mode? Safe mode can be accessed by turning the unit on and pressing F8 for about once a second.
Does an external monitor, if one was available to connect to it, exhibit the same symptoms?

Yes, the problem still exists when I start the computer in safe mode and bios mode. How can I verify that I have the latest updates? I opened Windows Updates, and I'm being told that my computer is up to date. Is there something I'm missing? Where can I acquire what I'm missing? Thanks.

If the issue persists on the BIOS screen, then I am afraid this indicates it is a hardware issue. There is no update that would correct an issue that happens in the BIOS screen.
The issue you described could possibly be the result of an outdated driver. Video drivers on manufacture sites are typically several versions behind the driver direct from the video card manufacturer. For example, my old notebook has not received a video driver update since 2011 but AMD released an update within the last month. However, this is not a driver issue since it happens in the BIOS screen.
Connecting an external monitor would help confirm that it is indeed a hardware issue.

I would like to try downloading the latest driver for my computer and see if that resolves my issue. How can I find out if my driver(s) is/are up to date? What type of driver am I looking for regarding my situation?
So far I have found the drivers offered for my computer at this hp link:

Do you know what video card the unit has? From the driver page, it could have an Nvidia card or any one of the Intel cards. If I know exactly which one it has, I can try to find the newest driver for it.
Also, is it still using the Windows Vista 32bit it came with?

I followed the directions from a microsoft webpage to determine my computer's video card, and it appears my video card is a
Chip type - Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family
DAC type - Internal
Adapter String - Mobile Intel(R) GMA 4500MHD
Driver Date: 8/25/2010
Driver Version: 8.15.10.2202
I believe it is still using Windows Vista 32bit. That's what it says on my computer properties' basic display information.
I have also noticed the following problem on my Device Manager window: could this be related to my screen issue?

This driver should be the newest driver for the system.
The 6to4 device in device manager wouldn't cause this issue. The 6to4 adapter is for using IPv6 networks with IPv4 networks as the two are not directly compatible with each other. IPv4 networks are still the dominant networks.

Did the updated driver correct the issue?
