Just wanted to say a big thank you to Bastiaan who identifed the loose cable and the helpful photos oif how to fix it. I have been frustrated for several days now by this problem which also rendered teh nicrophone u/s as well.

2 seconds after exposing the connector bing all working. My laptop was 3 days old and I had spent a lot of time transfering applications and data acroos to it the last thing I wanted to do was send it back.

I am frankly amazed at the no of useres who have been "forced" into reste and restarts because support these never consider that there is a hardware problem, it always has to be teh software!!

much much much thanks to Bastiaan!  I had a suspicion that cable or something was lose.  I started getting "USB device not recognized".  Now the funny thing is this device doesn't show up all the time.  Since I don't use webcam often, I just ignore.  Then it got really annoying.  I started to investigate and notice my "webcam" no longer shows up.  Instead of talking to HP tech, I searched and lo and behold, Bastiaan had posted a solution.

So for anyone with "USB device not recognize" and don't see webcam under device manager (under imaging), try Bastiaan's solution on page 3, page 4 of this topic.

Just wanted to add more info.  I have a DV7-6163US.  I did removed the lower right screw of the screen.  From there, I use a credit card.  Be careful, since HP used two sided tape so the bevel is sticking to another part.  Use a credit card, gradually slide it up, apply slight pressure.  Once you see the white cable, push it up.  Now I recommend to turn on the machine and make sure the webcam is detected before you snap the bevel/screw back.

I have a HP DV7 which is now 8 months old. Webcam could not be detected by windows. Got told it was a driver problem but everything I looked at implied it was a hardware issue. Sent it to the local HP service centre and when they opened it found a wire had come away from the camera microphone module. They fixed it the same day. The problem is the repair only lasted two weeks and now it has done the same thing. Seems the repair or design is dodgy. Maybe the vibration durign transport (in the car from site to site) shakes the wire loose. Not a good thing for a portable device.

One thing I did find out is the webcam and microphone are all part of the same (one) module. To find out if the wire coming away from its socket is the problem you are experiencing, test to see if the built in microphone is working. If the microphone and webcam have both gone west then chances are you are suffering from what seems to be an inherant design flaw with this particular model of HP laptop.

Not happy given the price I paid for this product. May expect it on a $400 machine but a $2000 one? Not acceptable really.
