I purchased HP 650 Notebook which came with Suse Linux.

 

I installed Windows 64-bit and tried installing the matching graphics driver:

Intel High-Definition (HD) Graphics Driver

 

as specified on the drivers list for Windows 64-bit here:

After installing the driver I was requested to restart the computer, and after the restart, when Windows starts booting, after showing the Windows logo on the black background the computer restarts again before booting into Windows.

 

After this boot crash a startup repair is suggested and I can perform system restore which allows me to log in to Windows but I still don't have the display drivers installed and things like Aero don't work.

 

I tried several times re-installing the drivers and had the same problem  after each attempt.

 

Please help.

That is quite a few failed updates.  This may be related to the issue, but we won't really know until the update issue is resolved. 

 

 

Review this document from Microsoft as it addresses this particular error.  It also has various tools to try in the event the first option does not correct the issue. 

 

 

You can also try the Windows Update Troubleshooter included in Windows 7. 

 

Go to Start>Control Panel>Find and fix problems under System and Security>Fix problems with Windows Update under System and Security.

Is the Intel video driver the only one you are having an issue with?

 

Was anything else installed with the Intel driver on the first attempt?  I ask this as it might not be the graphics driver causing the issue if there was more than one driver/program installed prior to the reboot.  A system restore would undo all the events after the date and time. 

 

 

By chance, have you tried the automated installer from Intel?  If not, I would give it a try as it would get the newest driver from Intel.  Since the system appears not to be using switchable graphics, this shouldn't be an issue.

Thank you for your reply but unfortunately none of the methods you suggested worked for me.

 

Among the new steps I tried doing:

 

  • I installed all the recommended Windows updates which also included "Intel Corporation - Graphics Adapter WDDM1.1, Graphics Adapter WDDM1.2 - Intel(R) HD Graphics 3000" (update released in December, 2012). After these Windows updates, when I restarted the computer, when Windows was starting I got a "Blue screen of death" of a fatal error of some kind. Startup repair didn't help neither, so I had to re-install Windows.
  • After I had a fresh copy of Windows which didn't have any drivers installed yet, I only installed the WiFi driver (Atheros AR9485 802.11b/g/n Wireless LAN Driver for Microsoft Windows), and then before installing any other driver I tried installing the Intel Graphics driver again (from the HP website). Restarted the cpmputer - and again the same crah.
  • Eventually I tried the Intel Driver Update Utility that you suggested, but after I started the utility it wrote "Analyzing system" and nothing else happened for a very long time (more than 10 minutes I think). So eventually I just closed this web page that only kept showing the "Analyzing" message.

Any other ideas what could be causing this?

Should I try Installing Windows 8 instead? Do you believe that this could change anything?

I don't know if it's related to this problem, but when I'm installing Windows updates, most of them are security updates which fail to install:

Thank you very much for all the help!

 

The problem is almost solved. I used the Update Troubleshooter and after running it Windows installed all the updates that previously failed. After a couple of cycles of Windows updates and restarts, after installing Windows Service Pack 1, I tried installing the Intel graphics driver again through the suggested Windows updates, and this time there was no crash at boot time. I logged in to Windows and finnaly the driver is really installed and Aero works great.

 

The only thing remaning unsolved now is that I can't control the screen brightness using the dedicated keyboard keys F2 and F3. Is there some other driver that I need to install to make these keys functional?

Does installing the Quick Launch software help?

 

It may not hurt to reinstall the OSD Software.

 

 

The brightness function (f2, f3) is typically controlled by the video driver.  The Intel driver through Windows Update may have been just the driver rather than the utility software.  I suspect the core of the initial issue was resolved by the Windows Updates, so I would recommend trying the Intel automated updater to make sure you have the full driver package in addition to the two listed above.

Thanks again for your quick replys.

 

I installed quick launch and the OSD software. Now thinng like volume up and down (f9 and f10) are working and there's even a nice OSD indicator, but f2 and f3 for screen brightness don't work.

 

But I now when I go to Control Panel\Hardware and Sound\Power Options I got a screen brightness toggle on the bottom which works and even activates HP's OSD as you can see here:

The only remaining problem is that I don't have f2 and f3 as shortcuts for this function.

Is there anything else I can try?

By chance, did you try the Intel update utility to make sure that it gets the full featured Intel driver?

Hey,

 

I ran the Intel update utility and now for the graphics driver it says "Your driver is current."

 

While for other components like "Intel Chipset Software Installation Utility (Chipset INF)", "Audio Driver for Intel Desktop Board" and  "Wireless Networking (WiFi)" it says "This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates."

 

For "Wired Networking" it just says "Error".

 

Any tips on that? Thank you!
