The only real reason you should get the error message "This device is unknown or unsupported. Please contact the manufacturer for possible updates." is if the component was not made by Intel.
I am showing that this system has an Intel processor, so the chipset should be Intel.
Try installing this chipset driver as this is the newest version from HP.
The utility wouldn't be able to update the audio driver since it isn't made by Intel. However, you can install this driver if you want to be certain you have the newest driver from HP.
I didn't see an Intel WiFi card for this particular system, so I wouldn't be concerned about getting that error message for the wifi card. The Ethernet card is made by Realtek, so the it's the same scenario.
Going back to the F2/F3 brightness key issue, I suspect that just the hardware driver for the video card was installed. To ensure that the full software package is installed, install this driver (the driver can always be updated again later if needed).
Let me know what happens.

I came across this thread today and thought it might be helpful in this particular scenario regarding the f2/f3 brightness functions.
Message 39 of 49 has some steps that may work for you.
Let me know if it helps at all.

I tried re-installing the HP drivers as you suggested and tried installing the software from Microsoft but sadly none of this worked for me.
I still can't control the screen brightness with F2/F3...

Hi!
I have similar problem with functional keys F2/F3. I can't control the screen brightness with F2/F3.
I used Windows 7 Ultimate SP1 64 bit.
If I press Fn+F2/F3 - nothing happens. The situation is similar to Message 8 in this subject.
I installed quick launch and "HP On-Screen Display Utility" - sp55152.exe - but this could not help, other functional keys work prorerly.
Could you please give me a piece of advice.
Thank you.

@vikhpuser,
I understand the F2/F3 brightness keys are not functioning as expected.
Did they ever work properly or is this a recent development?
Did anything change prior to the issue happening (updates, error messages, etc.)?
Is this for an HP 650 or a different notebook?

I understand the F2/F3 brightness keys are not functioning as expected. - YES
Did they ever work properly or is this a recent development? - NO. Never. This is a new notebook with SUSE Linux and I reinstalled Windows 7 and installed all updates from the microsoft.
Did anything change prior to the issue happening (updates, error messages, etc.)? - This keys never worked. There are no error messages displayed on the screen and in Windows logs
Is this for an HP 650 or a different notebook? - YES. This is HP 650 notebook.

@vikhpuser,
Have you tried installing the latest video driver for your notebook? The video driver on consumer notebooks plays a role in the brightness keys, but not 100% certain about probooks.

In our company we have the same problem as you explained above.
We have 24 pieces of this model and all of them aren't working brightness buttons.
I have tested with Windows 7 UItimate 32 bit and 64 bit with no success.
I returned back one of laptops to the HP warranty partner and waiting for resolution.

Hello Maxswagg.
Are you saying that the notebook powers off when you attempt to turn it on?
Do any of the lights (such as CAPS LOCK) flash in a pattern?
Do you hear the fans spin?
I'll keep an eye out for your reply. Have a great day.
