HP Envy 13-D045TU
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

The laptop overheats regularly even when using simple software like Chrome browser and while printing/scanning. I do not use this laptop for gaming, it is a work laptop for me. I have not used it to watch movie.The overheating area is at the blank space between the power button and the "Bang & Olufsen" label.

Yesterday (18.03.2016), a HP support remote controlled my laptop, changed the BIOS, cleaned up several temporary web and windows files. The service ticket number is 3026582369. The support has "have deleted the unwanted temporary files from the sysetem, checked with the system configuration and updated the BIOS".

The laptop is new, just got it less than 3 weeks ago. I use the laptop on a table and there is nothing underneath the laptop. Using external cooling fan doesn't help at all with the cooling.

Despite the BIOS change above and the files deletion, the laptop still overheats. This is bad, HP. Very bad.

Please help.

Grab one of the free temperature monitor apps listed here and let's get a reading on just how hot it's running.

http://www.makeuseof.com/tag/3-laptop-computer-temperature-monitor-apps-save-hard-drive/

It is an i7 processor and is going to generate some heat but if it cannot be controlled we want to give you some specific ammunition to perhaps make your case for a replacement.

Hey Hanafi2016, has your problem been resolved? I am facing the exact same issue, so could you tell me if something has happened since?

hi guys, i've got one as well, i5 variant and facing the same problem. i have experience servicing laptops of all kinds. anyways, my company provided all our staff with envy13, both 15and 17 variants. this is what i've found out after some testing;

heating issue is caused mostly by the onboard wireless card.these are the scenarios where i conducted the test;

ambient temperature; 27Celcius,

during normal browsing,while im typing this, (no videos), its rather warm and normal and processor cores were at around 25-35Celcius. got this reading using speedfan software.

while playing a youtube video at 2K resolution, the processor cores' temp jumped up another 7-10 degrees C. playing a 4K video on youtube made the cores' temp to read at around 48-56 C. at this point, the area in between the power button and Bang olufsen text was feeling hot already.

i stopped the youtube stream and saw the temps g down and also the heated area started to cool. to test my theory regarding the onboard wireless being the cause, i started to downalod a large file while no video was played, CPU temp was just around 30-32 C, but the laptop was feeling hot again in the concerned area.

the cooling fan used is rather small for a core i5 or i7, and i understand this is due to the thickness of the laptop.

this is just my experiment though, wonder what will be HPs solution

PS: we have just had the onboard SSD replaced on one of the laptops here, it failed due to the heating issue and another dead onboard wireless card waiting to be replaced.

hope to hear from HP soon on  a long term solution

Hello,

This is a great location to get assistance! I read your post and see that the Laptop is overheating. Thanks for providing that information. I would like to help you resolve this issue.

I would suggest trying the steps listed in this document: Reducing Heat Inside the Laptop to Prevent Overheating.

Sometimes issues can be caused by stress on the computer, I would follow the steps for Manage applications and system features to increase performance: Computer is Slow.

You can click on the "Accept as Solution" if the issue is resolved and the "Thumbs Up" for my effort. Please keep me posted. Good Luck!

Hi there @Nxaxra2015

Gemini02 is currently out of office so I have been entrusted to jump in and see if I can do anything to help. I see that you were provided with the Overheating documentation already and that you have conducted your own research to see when it heats up the most and what is running.

You had mentioned that you are waiting for an HP Engineer to do an onsite visit after calling our phone support team.

Other than the documentation, the best solution at this moment would be to see what the Engineer says about the heat and see if they can resolve the issue more physically.

After the visit, please let me know how it went and what the verdict was.

Thanks 🙂

Thanks . I am still waiting for the engineer apparently since it was weekend the service center is not working that makes it at least 72 hours before the complaint can be attended to. I am traveling now which means at least 1 week where any feedback will happen. I fear or now really believe that it's a design fault since the last time I put on the machine today. without using wifi even it was heating up. Clear case of looks not meeting quality standards.

@EKhalidy
Welcome to the HP Forums,
I hope you're well 🙂

As I understand the computer is overheating after a recent update,

To let you know this isn't a known issue as such, however, I have a few steps to resolve this issue:

Symptoms of heat issues and causes of excessive heat

The following list describes some of the issues caused by overheating in the notebook:

  • Games stop responding during play.
  • Windows stops responding during use.
  • Fans inside the notebook become louder because they are spinning faster as the laptop gets hot, to remove the heat.
  • When starting the laptop, it sometimes stops at a black screen and does not open into Windows. Windows usually stop responding when it does open.

The following list describes some causes of excessive heat:

  • Dust inside the laptop.
  • A new component, such as a hard drive, is added. The extra component causes the power supply to work harder and generate more heat. Extra heat also radiates off the new component and adds to the temperature inside the case.
  • Over time, some cooling fans might slow down and wear out, as the laptop is getting hot, depending on the usage of the laptop.
  • High ambient room temperature.

Step 1: Removing dust and lint by cleaning vents

Step 2: Ensuring proper space for ventilation

Step 3: Updating the BIOS

Step 4: Using HP CoolSense technology

Step 5: Placing the notebook in a cooler room

Step 6: Testing for hardware failure

If the hardware has failed, capture the failure ID and revert for further assistance.

And I Hope you have a good day, Ahead.
