This computer is pretty cool.

I learned some tidbits I'll pass on if you didn't already know.

  • It is not compatible with the HP Active Stylus.
  • It does not support Windows Hello

In other news, I was cleaing out a bunch of flash drives and SD cards, when I accidently formatted the HP Recovery partition. Yeah... First off, why is that so easily accessible, and second, why can you even format that partition? I ordered the USB recovery stick for $40 just in case I need it in the future.

I have downloaded all the HP drivers and made an install USB stick from the tool @hchen42 has recommended. Now, I'm only waiting to get my ssd in the mail tomorrow. I guess I wouldn't need the USB from HP if I made the one from @hchen42 's instructions would I...

Alright folks, the Crucial X300 works like a champ. The SSD was picked up by neither the My PC folder nor the Disk Manager. So, to get it to work you need to

1. Create the installation media from the link provided by Hchen

2. Turn off computer and install the SSD stick. (Be careful when prying off the back cover. Use plastic tools and move slowly. When you pull the cover off, don't peel it off. Pull it straight off or it can break the snaps that hold it on.. cough cough).

3. Plug in Windows Install USB

4. Turn computer on and then do an advanced restart (found in the reset settings/options)

5. Click Install windows after you boot from the USB

6. You will be prompted to install it in two ways. Choose the one that says "Custom"

7. Selected the drive (probably "Drive 0") that says "Unallocated space."

8. Then install

9. Later, you need to choose which version of windows to boot from or change your BIOS settings.

YAY. I got my definitive answer!

@Hchen42

I got Power Director to work on the new SSD.

Copy the Cyberlink folder with the power director from the HDD's "Program Files" to your new "Program Files" on the SSD.

Copy over the "Bonjour" folder from the same Program Files. Now launch the "PowerDirector_video_editing.exe"

It prompted me to install "Rich Video" or something like that. Do that and it fires right up.

Add a shortcut to the Start Menu folder or just pin it to Start for easy access.

Best,

Kal

Very nice updates KalHp16. Thanks for posting the summary directions and the power director tip.

Hey, I was having the boot manager appear at every start up. So I found a way to fix it without deleting your version of Windows on the HDD.

Go to File explorer-> This PC-> Computer -> System Properties ->Advanced System Settings -> Under the Advanced Tab click the "Settings" button for Startup and Recovery -> Uncheck the box that says "Time to display list of operating systems" or just set it to '0'

Restart your PC and viola.

Another tweak that I like is disabling the rotating bubbles animation at Windows Startup. I think it looks better and doesn't take as long.

Go to Run-> msconfig -> Boot tab -> check the box that says "No GUI boot" -> Apply and restart your computer

KalHp16, awesome, thanks for the heads up on the Director.  That's kind of lame that we have to copy the program and the install from the website doesn't work.

Nice find on those tweaks.

We are an awesome team of "self support".  I see some of you have been over at Best Buy site answering questions too. 🙂

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this board!   I was looking high and low for a laptop that was thin and had good battery life for work travel but most importantly had room for an SSD and HDD. I got one of the Dell insperon I7579 at Best Buy but realized it had a really slow SSD and alot of wasted spoce on the inside where it could have fit a drive or at least an extra slot for expantion.

Upon seeing this board I returned the Dell and got the HP aq103 (they were on sale for the same price at the time).

I have finally found an EVO 960 in stock (newegg has a few 250GB's upon writing this) and will be installing it likely this weekend.  I will be sure to post here on my results in terms of speed tests and compatability.  Pretty sure of compatability, thanks to you guys, but still really curious about speed.  This laptop will be a real Gem if it supports the read/write on that drive.  Pitty about no digitizer/stylus support though (plz correct me if I'm wrong about this bit).

Thank you to this board for ending the hours of searching for a new laptop!

Antithesis4: really looking forward to your report and speed test results! I've got my heart set on a 512GB 960 Pro which doesn't seem to be available at the moment. So I'll wait for it and your report will help a lot.
