Hi,

This is a common issue for Laptop with Intel N3540 processor in Windows 10.

Here is a solution posted by GM_823:

Follow this

1. Window + X

2. Go to Device Manager

3. Drop down Display Adapters

4. Right click on your display adapter (mine's Intel(R) HD Graphics)

5. Click on Disable. Screen will blackout for a few seconds.

6. Once it returns, right click again and click Enable.

7. Try your brightness keys.

If the issue remains after restart, you may consider to turn off the Fast boot option

To turn off Fast boot:

1. Open Power Options in Control Panel

2. Choose " Choose what the power buttons do"

3. Click on the  "Change settings that are currently unavailable"

4. Under shutdown settings untick Fast Boot.

5. Restart Windows

Hope this help.

Were you using your laptop for a long time without this problem?  Can you recall what might have been done around the time this issue started happening?  Did you perform any software updated from HP or Microsoft?
