Model: HP Pavilion G6 2293sa

Windows 8

I've had this laptop since Jan 2013. The fan has suddenly begun to stop/start constantly which is irritating. I've tried cleaning the vents. But this hasn't helped.

Could someone advise me on how to resolve this issue?

Hello Belle-vue,

I understand the fan will start and stop constantly, is that correct? I will do all I can to help you resolve this issue.

Whenever the fan does go off, does it stay off long enough where you get a warning about a fan issue or heating issue. On the other hand, does it just come right back on after a couple brief seconds.

If I have been helpful or if you would like to say thank you for me trying to help, click the white star under my name to give me Kudos. I really appreciate it.

Please respond when you get a chance.

Thanks

Hi RedRose0528

I have a Pavilion g6-1004ev and before a week it started to do that start - stop thing with the CPU fan.

But, not only it is annoying, but I installed a CPU temp monitoring tool and I watched the temp rise over 100 C when I tried to compressed an 8-gb file.

In an idle state the temp would have an avg value of 65 to 70 C degrees.

Is this a hardware issue? Should I try updating the BIOS? Please respond soon as my laptop has become useless 😞

Best,
Peter

Hello Peter_Mitakos,

I see that you are having problems with the system fan and overheating of the computer. I have a couple of suggestions that may help with this issue.

I would suggest a BIOS update as it may help with the issue. Here is a link that may help with overheating issues in certain situations.

I hope this helps.

Hi npw05001,

I just did a BIOS updated to the latest version (F.66, rel. date: 2013-02-28). Nothing changed with the fan issue.

Also, I have already followed the instructions and cleaned (using compressed air) the vents - fan. Dust came out and everything seemed clean.

Is there anything else you would suggest?

Best Regards,
Peter

It could be a hardware issue.

If those steps didn't help then there are only some preventative steps that I can offer. Here is a link to the information on heat from the computer.

I don't know if this is helpful at all but I noticed that this on / off procedure is periodic.

The fan start every 5 secs. It spins for less than a sec and again after 5 secs the same. That procedures keeps the temp in idle to about 58 - 59 C. But if you happen to do something that utilizes CPUs more then this on - off cooling is not adequate. The temp then can reach to the limit of 105 C and laptop restarts (strangigly with no fan error message at the starting screen).

I would also like to say that when I cleaned it (the day before yesteday) the fan did work constantly for about an hour. But when I tried to test if everything was back to normal by compressing a large file the laptop restarted and when it was on again the fan was doing that on-off thing again.

I have seen some updates that fix the issue to where a constant spin is giving by the fan which is probably what you need when utilizing the CPU. I'm not sure what else you could try to get the issue corrected.

I would also suggest creating your own thread explaining your issue and the things you have tried. This will allow for more visibility and the other HP experts may be able to provide a resolution for you.

Sorry that the steps I gave did not help.

There is a mystery behind this issue, but I had some good progress on it.

I disabled a setting in BIOS that had to do with the CPU fan. If I remember well it was called "Fan always on". I do not know how this could fix the issue but, just to be sure, I tried disabling it.

Also, from Windows 7 I found the "HP Power Manager" and set it to "Economy" to make sure that CPU wont reach high utilization levels (although I think that this had nothing to do with the fix).

So, this morning, I started my laptop and fortunately everything was normal. Fan starts whenever is needed and not in a periodic on-off state. Also the temp in idle has dropped to 40C and right now I compress 6gb of files with the temp in 47C 🙂

I will let you know if that irritating fan starts it's thing again.

(I do not know if I have the time now to create a new thread but if this issue occurs again I might do it.)

Thanks for the update,

Glad you were able to find a resolution!! Post back here if there is a change.
