I have (as specific as I can get) an HP Pavilion Beats laptop that I've just gotten yesterday. I'm trying to find a way in which to lock the fn key then unlock it by holding it (such as when Caps lock is on and you depress shift).

So far, all suggestions have not worked. Pressing f10, pressing f10 at startup, holding esc at startup, holding shift+some crazy combination. I've tried it all but it's gotten me nowhere and I cannot find anywhere that I can lock the fn key and/or pull up the BIOS, as so many people have told me about so far.

I was wondering if you'd be able to help?

Thank you!

Methinks the HP Expert does not understand the question.  It appears Microsoft 'jigged' the FN key function so the F1, F2 etc no longer function like they have for the past decades.  The Function keys are defaulted to the functions you used to access by pressing the FN key, eg brighten or dim the screen, turn on and off sound.  I would dearly like to have the Functions as they used to be.  (Maybe MS might fix this issue in Windows 9).

Hi,

You can change the default behaviour of the function keys as follows.

Shut down the notebook - if you're running Windows 8/8.1, do this by holding down the left Shift key as you click on Shutdown to temporarily prevent a hybrid boot.

Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu.

Select the Bios option ( f10 ), then make the change shown in the document on the following link.

How do you get into the BIOS

Hi,

Shutdown the notebook.

Tap away at the esc key as soon as you start the notebook to enter the Start-up Menu, then select f10 to enter the Bios Menu.

So if i cant get into my BIOS because my computer starts up to quickly, there must be a way to switch the button off, or at least switch it so i need to click ''fn + f2'' for example to turn down the brightness, on my pc. Without any need of turning it off, or clicking i dont know what buttons to get into the BIOS...

Very simple, and i was finally able to lock the FN key. Spent two weeks trying to figure it out, but got it. You can just search for "Windows Mobility Center" on windows 8, and adjust the Function Key Row from "Function Key" to "Multimedia Key" or vise versa.

Best of luck!
