Hi guys, I'm wondering if anyone here can help me!

Here's the situation as best as I can describe it:

The laptop is a pavillion dv6-2112sa, running Windows 7

I had been using the laptop as normal, everything working fine. I was loading an online tutorial for my uni course, went away for 5 minutes to make a coffee and when I came back the screen was frozen (but not black, focused on the window I had open). I tried the usual Esc, ctrl+alt+del... nothing. Left it for another 5 minutes to see if it would come back to me...nothing. I got impatient and rebooted it from the power button and now I get nothing but a black screen.

Now, the battery on my laptop has been dead for a while, so I have been using it on power cable only. I tried the hard reset a couple of times (power and battery out, press power for a minute) and it makes no difference. When I turn it on I get lights and fans, but I don't get a response from the caps lock light if I press it, and I don't get any windows loading sounds. I also tried using an HDMI cable to link it to my TV monitor, but again nothing happened. When working normally it will automatically link the laptop screen to the TV.

That being said, I now consider the problem to be out of my depth and would greatly appreciate any help and advice!

hey I had exactly the same problem as you!

I found through a bit of trial and error that the laptop will start (and run properly) if it's overheated. If you block the fan vent and turn it on, wait until it's really hot and turn it off and on again, the laptop will start up properly and will stay working until it is either switched off or goes to sleep. It might take a couple of goes, it usually takes me half an hour or so of having it running with my jacket over the vent, but it will start up eventually.

You can stop it from going to sleep mode on the power settings, assuming you're using windows 7, the route is "Control Panel> Hardware and sound> power options." You can change the settings so your laptop doesn't go to sleep after inaction and (if it's more convenient) so that shutting the lid doesn't cause it to sleep. It means that if you're careful about keeping it plugged in etc so that it doesn't run out of battery you won't need to start it up and don't have to worry about overheating it.

Clearly this isn't a particularly long term solution (overheating the laptop regularly in order to switch it on can't be good for it) I'm kind of hoping that any of the people who work for HP can use this solution to identify the problem and provide a solution that doesn't involve pushing your laptop to dangerous heat levels, but so far it has worked for me and I'm still able to use this laptop while I'm waiting for the new one to arrive.

Hope this helps at all!

Thought that it might show my comment above as a direct reply. To clarify, my laptop's problem is the same as schnnauzerlady 's on page 5; the screen was not working in start up and the lights on the caps lock key would not show before I found the solution I posted. I tried the power resets suggested earlier in the thread and they didn't work at all for me.

I have tried all of this... will not work.  This is my second HP laptop.. the first one took a dump too.  I ended up getting rid of it for parts.  I spent a lot of money on these and will never put another dime in and HP or recommend one to anyone.

I have an HP dv7-1133cl. My computer will power up, all the lights are on, the cap and number lock flashes but the screen is black.  I have tried to do a power reset a couple of times.  Any suggestions?

Thanks so much!

As my computer screen does not come on, I have been through all the hard sets, hooking it up to another monitor. I am at a standstill right now. Can't get on it to do anything. I don't know what else to do. Not computer savvy, so what next. I paid a lot of money for this.. I don't have a lot of money to put in it. Please help.
