No, unfortunately it may be a motherboard issue. If you tried the hard reset already (removing battery and power and holding the power button down), the only other thing I would try before swapping out the processor and/or motherboard would be removing the CMOS battery for about 5 minutes. The CMOS battery, though, on this computer is located on the underside of the motherboard so it isn't a quick and easy task. I would suggest only attempting that if you've done that type of thing before. Otherwise it might be better left to a local repair shop (if the notebook is out of warranty).
I'm not sure if there is a vent on the cover over the RAM on this computer but check the cover that goes over the RAM and make sure there is no dust or anything on that may be shorting the connection to the RAM (crazy but I've seen it happen). Keep trying the hard reset. You could even let the computer sit over night with no power plugged into it. Try ejecting the CD tray. These are long shots. Since no fans or other components are coming on it may ultimately be a bad motherboard. If you take to a local repair shop or decide to repair it yourself let me know what happens.
Here is the Maintenance and Service Guide for the CQ56. Removing the CMOS (aka RTC) battery begins on page 69. There is an exploded diagram on page 16.

Hey jlheureux11,
I'm so sorry to hear that. Was the charger plugged directly into a wall or any type of surge protector? It sounds like there may be some irreparable damage. The extent of the damage really varies from case to case It depends on how much of a power surge there was. Sometimes it's just the charger that is affected. I would definitely recommend trying another charger if you've got one that wasn't affected by the lights flickering.
If it's more than just the charger, the data on the hard drive may still be salvageable. Take a look at this link for more information on recovering data from a hard drive.
Let me know what you find out if you try another charger and if you have any questions on using Knoppix. Hope this helps! I'll keep an eye out for your reply 🙂

Hello ballermeese,
I see that you are having problems with your computer not turning on. I would like to help with this issue but I need some information.
Can you provide the model and product number of the computer? Here is a link that shows how to find that information.
Do you get any indications of power at all?
