At HP online support, there are 10 files listed.  Last time I formatted, I had to go through all 10 til I got one that worked.  I saved the one that worked, sp56942.exe .  This time, it doesn't work.  So I can only assume it was some combination of the 10 files I tried that got it to work.  This time I would like to do it with the proper file the first time.  It's a shame that HP's support page doesn't ask you for your S/N like other companies do, and then tell you which file you need.  So here is the info I see you ask other people for, hopefully, you can provide the correct info.  Thanks.

Hi:

You need these drivers...

Ethernet:

This package provides the Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driver that enables the Realtek Network Interface Card (NIC) Chip in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.

File name: sp52421.exe

Wireless:  That was the correct driver for the hardware ID you posted.

The next time you have to reinstall the operating system, just google the ID's you have questions about, and you will be able to find the right driver the first time.

Installing drivers by the trial and error method is a sure way of corrupting the windows registry, which is probably why the right driver isn't working anymore.

Here is a newer driver than the one on your notebook's support page.  It should work.

This package contains the driver installation package for the Ralink Wireless LAN Controllers in supported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.

ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp59501-60000/sp59828.exe

If this one doesn't work either, I will give you some instructions to try manually installing the driver.

As I said, this time I only installed the ONE that worked last time after trying them all.

If this one does work, I'll put it in my drivers folder again for next time, no need to look it up again.

HP Recommended

Ok, neither one of those worked.

It seems you didn't understand that I FORMATTED the laptop before trying that one driver.  There are no other issues with this laptop.  Fresh install, all other drivers installed fine, except network.  The icon at the bottom says no networks available and the little internet key on the keyboard that is supposed to be blue is orange.

See if manually installing the driver I posted works.

Sometimes the auto install method doesn't work.

It is newer than the one on the support page and it should work for the RT5390 wireless card your notebook has.

Now that you have run the driver I posted, see if this works...

Click on the device labeled Network Controller.

Click on the driver tab.

Click on Update Driver.

Select the Browse my computer for driver software option, and browse to the driver folder that was created when you ran the file.

That folder will be located in C:\SWSetup\sp59828.

Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked, and the driver should install.

Then restart the PC.

Do the same with the ethernet controller if you are writing the ethernet controller driver I posted didn't work either.

Browse to the sp52421 driver folder in the swsetup folder.

About to try it, but just to let you know, this one is no longer showing a problem.

This one is still showing a problem.

Nope.

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.

Ralink RT5390 802.11b/g/n wifi adapter

The device cannot start (code 10)

Gonna format and reinstal while I await your answer.

HP Recommended

Well, the only other suggestion I can offer would be to right click on the Ralink card, select uninstall, select the uninstall driver box, restart the notebook and try manually installing the original driver from your notebook's support page.

But if you are going to reformat, try the newer driver I posted first.

Hopefully the auto install will just work.
