Thanks Duffydon, I may try  disabling the IME.  The versions of the IME that are supposed to work are too old at this point and I was unable to even install them with all the patches and upgrades Windows has released in the past few months, they won't install or generate erros.

I have tried a few of the possible solutions posted here and on other forums, ufortunately people are too quick to come to the forums to post a "solution" and insist that "their" solution is the ultimate solution not realizing that the problem occurs after the PC has been on for a little while.   Also some fixes may not work for al HP laptops, I am not a big fan of messing with the BIOS, so I rather leave that alone, as far as I know updating your BIOS is not necessarily recommended unless you really need it, this has not bugged me that much to go that route.

There seem to be many "fixes" to this problem which appear to not work for everybody. Until now, none of these has worked for  me on my Pavilion 15 [15-p156na] Laptop. It has proved very frustrating ad Microsoft and HP appear to not want to know.

However, today, I got a fix - at least for me! I went to the ITNEL site and downloaded the latest version of the INTEL Engine Management Interface - 11.0.0.1158 dated Decembr 16th 2015. Hey presto, even after extendive use of my laptop, it powers down correctly every time!

This version is NOT available as yet on the HP site.

I hope that helps others.

I went to the Intel site, but there are three packages of the newest MEI driver. How do I determine which one I need? (I have an HP ProBook 4540s and just updated to Windows 10 64-bit).

Thanks so much!

The Intel site says the install package is smart and will install the correct driver for the hardware. So I downloaded the 1158 version and it installed OK!

Has this been fixed?  I have the HP ENVY m7-k111dx.  I have only had it about 2 weeks and every time I shut down it won't shut down completely.  I always have to hold the power button down.  Is this still a problem with anyone??

Hi Reverond.  I tried this solution, after trying all of the possible fixes I can find on any/all forums, but to no avail.  You are absolutely correct that this is one frustrating issue.  I upgraded to WIN 10 but I don't have the patience or willingness to go back to 8.1.  It amazes me how little MS concerns themselves with issues such as these.  Yes it is simple enough to do manually by Forcing the shutdown, but I have backups that run followed by a hibernation when they are done (around 4AM).  Oh well, nuff said.  Still frustrating..  Thanks for your suggestion !

If Windows 10 does not complete shutdown on a HP computer:

1- uninstall all windows update.

2- restart the computer.

3- run windows update and install.

4- restart the computer

test it, if it does not work.

install Linux :generic:

I had the same issue and tried many things.

Here's what just worked for me.

Firstly, I have an HP Pavillion Notebook.

1) Goto: www.hp.com

select "support"

select the tab: Software and drivers

Then let Windows find your computer automatically (safer)

Once identified, select it and (if asked) select your operating system (Windows 10)

You will see a list of recommended updates.

Update the "Bios" driver.

Make sure your notebook is plugged into the power supply.

It will do a few flashes and restarts.

Once cmpleted, you can sign in as usual.

Hopefully, you can now use your shutdown button and all will work.

It worked for me.

I also went back to the same site and updated all the recommended updates.

Good luck

I had the same issues. It has both sleep and shut down problems. Turning off Fast Startup solved sleep but not shutdown.

Then the following method worked for me without doing any crazy work/ re-installation.

  1. Go to BIOS setting.
  2. Make sure Intel® Virtualization Technology is Enabled (if not switch it to Enabled). EXIT WITH THAT CHANGE.
  3. Restart your computer. It should work.

PS: If it works, go ahead turn on Fast Startup on the Power Option in case you turned it off while doing the other method. (It's optional)

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the tip.  Unfortunately, I made this BIOS change and it didn't work.  The only function that works is Restart.  Shutdown, Hibernate and Sleep never fully finish.  I have to hold the Power Button until power off and that finishes the function.  Man this is aggrevating !  Hopefully someone will finally hit the magic trick and post it here.
