Like I mentioned before I have tried several solutions posted here and other forums, ufortunately these solutions do not work for every PC, and most importantly, people come to the forums to post a solution without realizing that the problem happens when the PC has been on for a while, at least an hour wihtout being restarted.

Finally, I found a solution for mine.  I have tested it for days, and it also works to put my laptop in or to bring it back from hybernation.

Instead of messing with the hundreds of IMEI updates, I just DISABLED it.  I have not noticed any changes or anything that may have affected my laptop.

Type DEVICE MANAGER in Windows search bar, open SYSTEM DEVICES, go to the IMEI (Intel Management Engine Interface), and click DISABLE, turn your computer off and turn it back on; obviously it may not work right after you disable it but it should work once you turn it back on.   You could enable it anytime, this is not deleting anything.  This is probably the most reasonable solution rather than creating conflicts with older versions of the IMEI.  Also I would no recommed to mess with the BIOS, and coming back to Windows 8.1 it's too extreme.

I hope this helps!

Voila !  Thank you so much.  I have been dealing with this problem for over a month and you provided the solution !

I will back out the 1 BIOS change I made and turn on the Fast Start option !

Again, great fix for a VERY aggrevating problem !

Seems to work for a lot of people. OK, perhaps HP can answer. What does the IEMI actually do and what are the implications of it being disabled?

It did not work for me 😞

Actually, I already gave up on windows 10, got back on 8.1 and still does not work, when it was something that used to work...

This problem is being totally ignored by Microsoft, HP and Intel. An unbelievable situation and a complete lack of problem ownership. My guess is that there is something nasty lurking here and the companies are scared of letting out the truth!
No solution works for everyone and it looks as there is no solution for many.
The drastic answer is to return to Win 8, but even that doesn't work for some. In any case, for anyone on Win 10.1, such a retrograde step is virtually unthinkable. Come on HP - grasp the mantle please!

You do not have to get rid of management interface engine just make sure it is a version 10 or less.

Sorry, but not true for me. I have tried versions 10, 9 and 8 to no avail - as have others. I thought I had fixed it with the Dec 2015 update from Intel, but 2 days later the problem returned.

I did not recommend any other versions but to DISABLE it, did you try that?   Mine has been working for weeks after I did that.

Yes. Disabling the IEMI works for me. My comment on IEMI version levels was in response to 3mk7's post.
Perhaps someone could explain the impact of disabling the IEMI? I have not noted anything different!

For whatever it is worth (and per a suggstion from this thread), I just disabled the Fast Startup. That seems to have solved the problem on my HP ProBook 4540s (was WIN 7 Pro 64-bit). I tried the BIOS change to disable the virtualization, and that did not help. I was afraid to download the MEI package from Intel becasue there are 3 of them and I was not sure which one to download because I did not want to 'kill' my laprop.

Research shows this was a problem starting wtih Winfdows 8! So frustrating this has not been fixed by Microsoft and Intel (who have an incesteous business relationship anyway). 'Screw the consumer' seems to be the motto.
