was this problem ever fixed? i upgraded to windows 8.1 from 7 and i am having the same problem. I am using hp pavilion g6 -1048ex model. The f12 key switched to airplane mode and the wi-fi is grey. cannot reactivate it, downloaded and installed the drivers and reinstalled but still not working. when i trouble shoot it says wi-fi capability is turned off, use the function key to turn it on but the key is only airplane mode. when i go to settings, change pc settings, network, and change it there, still not working, the wi-fi still grey. any help please?

Sorry, but to my knowledge it has STILL NOT been fixed. The way I get around it is as follows (on a Pavilion dv7):

  1. Control Panel
  2. Hardware and Sound
  3. Device Manager
  4. Scroll down to Network Adapters
  5. Find "Intel Centrino Wireless n-2230 --- OR SOMETHING SIMILAR, MAY BE DIFFERENT ON YOUR MACHINE
  6. Right click on Intel Centrino
  7. Click "UNinstall" (but not deleting)
  8. Shut down machine -- NOT reboot, shut down completely
  9. Start machine from scratch and log in
  10. Give a couple of minutes for all start up processes to run
  11. Try wireless button, sometimes requires two taps of wireless key (f12), but not fast taps one after the other
  12. Blue light comes on -- IF YOU'RE LUCKY
  13. Click on wireless icon
  14. Log in to wireless modem or service

I have followed this forum and several others for nearly two years now. I have tried everything that people have offered including fiddling in the BIOS. NONE of those solutions has worked for me.

The workaround I have set out above works for me. It may well not work for other people.

It is very frustrating that HP and Microsoft cannot get it right to issue fixes that work.

I manage to work around the problem by booting into the bios and enabling the wireless.

The result: I'm able to get wifi but the light indicator is always on (blue).

My laptop is a HP pavililion g6 series.

How to access Bios

Not sure if this will work for everybody but here it goes.

Just as i was at my wits end with this wireless problem which seems to be affecting alot of HP users, I decided to reset my computer and i ended up installing AVG pc tune up (the 1 day free trial version). There is an Airplane mode on the main screen of the AVG tuneup which told me it was on (hence orange light was on), so i turned the switch off and the white light comes back on. All it needed then was to be shut down and restarted and it worked.

Im guessing AVG has some sort of a different access route to the function key that seemed to correct the problem for me, hope this helps some of you as its worked for over 24 hours for me now although i dont dare to press the function key again incase the same problem occurs.

@alpha1233  which wi-fi card are you using? I have/had problems with Intel AC7260.
Because of crapy hardware design of HP Pavilion G6, without a physical hardware switch I had to revert back to stock Ralink wifi adapter, which is "certified" by HP.

Dear doofus228 and whose have this problem,

I installed WINDOWS 10 tech. Preview on my DV6-6c04et laptop and F12 button is orange and can't enable wireless card although wireless card recognised correctly by windows. (Same problem as your print screen picture)

My Solution: (SOLVED)

I realized that when i started to install WINDOWS 10 Tech. Pr. Wireless button is also orange (F12) so, i booted up my laptop (by pressing ESC for booting up DVD or you can enter Bios F10 and changing Boot options to first boot for DVD driver) with WINDOWS 7 DVD and after Language selecting windows (menu) i tried to change the wireless button to WHITE (or some laptops BLUE) then i canceled the installation of WINDOWS 7. Thank god it work.

Now, i can use F12 button for air plane mode in WINDOWS 10 Tech. Pr.

I hope, it will work for you too.
