I have an HP Pavilion dv7t-4000 laptop that is around three years old (has WIndows 7, i5 processor, video card specifically for gaming). Yesterday the screen began behaving oddly and going black randomly when I was on my computer. Now the computer itself is not frozen (if I'm playing a game when it happens, I can still hear the animations when I click with my mouse). Sometimes the screen comes back after a few seconds. Other times it does not come back at all and I have to restart the computer before I have vision on the screen again. I've already tried the hard reset (taking out the battery and holding down the power button) but it didn't seem to help and the screen still randomly goes black. It also happens at different times. Sometimes it goes black at the start up (after the windows screen) and other times after I have already logged on and have been on the computer for a decent amount of time (15 minutes).

I also have tried using an external monitor to see what would happen (hooked it up to my tv). When the laptop screen went black, the monitor continued showing everything fine. However, it would not allow me to click or open anything (but the mouse would move).

I'm not too computer savvy myself, so I hoping this forum can help identify what the possible problem is and what I could do to fix it. Any help at all would be extremely appreciated.

Thank you so much for the explaination.  I thought I was going to have to use my dv7 as a boat anchor.  I remembered that taking the battery out and putting back in fixed this problem before.  I thought it was heat issue since thi thing runs so hot.  But now I know it can happen I will not have to throw it away.

thanks aging for the explaination of the black screen freeze

Hey!
I had the same problem. I tried a hard reset and it worked. A few hours later I had to reboot my computer because of Windows Updat and I had the same Error and now it won't work, also not with a hard reset! No F8 is working!
I have an HP Pavillion dv6-3053eg. When I try to boot, there is nothing on the Screen, no HP Screen or anything else. I hear the cooler and the Hard Drive and the Light on the Caps Lock button is blinking.
What can I do? Please help!

I have a DV7 7227cl nothing on the screen, the Wifi LED is orange and Caplocks is constantly blinking, I read about the blinking LEDs code but this conbination is not on the list, anyone have any idea of what's wrong.

Also have another DV7 7234 but this one the screen goes black after log in, mouse cursor is working fine but that's all that can be seen, tried the power reset and nothing, I will appretiate any help with this.

Your 7227 ccccl sounds like a motherboard problem. May need replacement.

With the 7234, try booting into safe mode and run a system restore to a period before the problem happened.

Event viewer can also be helpful.
