Hello faycal,

I see that you are needing a guide to changing your hard drive.

The HP expert @Huffer included a manual in his earlier post for changing the hard drive and it is pretty much the same in all models.

Here is a YouTube video of a hard drive replacement it may be helpful as well.

I get the same message.  I was having a problem booting the laptop (G62-407DX, Windows 7 64bit), I would get a blank screen with blinking cap lock.  So I swapped out the hard drive for a new one, the computer ran fine for a few days and then the same thing happened-hit power button, blank screen (no bios, no HP logo), blinking caplock.  This was with a new hard drive.  I did not get the smart hard disk 301 message, however.  I don't think this problem is hard drive related-could it be cpu related, or mobo?  Sometimes I have to do the hard reset several times before the computer will boot.  I'm thinking if it was cpu or mobo related I wouldn't be able to boot at all, and yet I still can (intermittenly).  Any thoughts?

Hello Splungeworthy,

I see that you are having intermittent start up problems with your HP computer.

From what you are describing I would think that it might be an issue with the motherboard or the SATA connection between the motherboard and hard drive.

I would think it is something with the hardware on the computer. It is weird that constant reboots will sometimes get it to boot.

Thank you for your reply.  This computer has always run very hot, which is why I immediately thought motherboard.  But your SATA connector theory is interesting.  Sometimes I'll get it out after not tying to start it up for weeks, and it will boot up (with the hard disc error message-and I know the hard drive has bad sectors).  Either way, I don't think the repair cost is justified for this computer-even refurbed versions (if you can find one listed) only go for $200 USD on Ebay.  I see more listed for parts!

You're welcome,

Yes you are correct motherboard repairs are very expensive and sometimes more than a new computer especially when the computer gets older because the parts become more expensive as well.

Hi there

I'm getting the same problem.

I know how to replace hdd etc...but I cant seem to enter BIOS at all...

When hitting F10 it says entering BIOS but immediately jumps to

"Hard Disk 1 (301)

F2  System Diagnostics

ENTER Continue STartup!"

Frustrating!!!

Am I doomed?

All System Diagnostics fail...however i should be able to enter bios seeing that its not part of the hdd right??

What is there left to do?

Hello Dewie,

I see that you are having a problem entering the BIOS of the computer. I have a couple of suggestions that may help with this issue.

Have you tried removing the hard drive first and then trying to boot to the BIOS? You may also try entering the BIOS through the start up menu by tapping "ESC" on start up.

For David PK

Same 301 problem here.  If I can/want to replace HD, here is the ifo you need.:

Model is HP Pacilion dv7-4283cl Entertainment PC.

Model and product numbers are:

584037-001

CPX9-TQQ2H-F6WCB-KJ4VP-2FF6T

X-16 96072

00196-142-869-795

This machine is about 2 1/2 years old--seems fairly new for an HD failure.
