Hello,

On my OfficejetPro 8620 I have already installed 2 Brand new Original 950XL cartridges, first it shows full. And when I want to print, it says: "The cartridge appears to be damaged." This is already the 2nd new cartridge I inserted!

What is wrong?

Please advise. I am in the middle of printing and have gotten stuck with my work.

Regards

Dorian

Hi @dwcdv,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that the cartridge appears to be damaged” even with brand‑new original 950XL cartridges, it usually points to either a contact issue, firmware mismatch, or a faulty cartridge batch. Here’s how you can resolve it:

Power Reset

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug the power cord for 60 seconds.
  • Plug it back in and restart.
  • This clears temporary memory errors.

Clean Cartridge Contacts

  • Remove the 950XL cartridges.
  • Use a lint‑free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water or isopropyl alcohol.
  • Gently clean the gold contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer carriage.
  • Let them dry fully before reinserting.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Go to the printer touchscreen: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update Printer.
  • Or download the latest firmware from HP’s support site for the OfficeJet Pro 8620.
  • Firmware updates often fix “damaged cartridge” errors with new batches.

Reset Printer Settings

  • On the touchscreen: Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore Defaults.
  • Reconfigure the printer and reinsert cartridges.
  • This clears stored error flags.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Hi Pallipurath,

Thank you for your suggestions.

I tried Step one and Step 2. They did not work.

When I downloaded the Firmware and tried to install it, it detected my Printer, but under Status, it said "Not Applicable."

I did : Setup>Tools>Restore Factory Defaults, but still the same message: One or more cartridges appear to be damaged and it shows the black "K".

What other options would I have?

Regards

Dorian

Hi Pallipurath,

Something is very weird, and I will try to explain it step by step:

I bought 2 cartridges, Black and Cyan, because I saw those levels were low.

I was away for 2 months and did not use the printer. When I got back, I got a message: Black is empty. I inserted the black it first showed 1/3 full and then give me the message that the cartridge is damaged. I took all out and made a hard reset. It came the same error message. Then it showed that Cyan is also empty. I also replaced the Cyan. Same error. Then I looked at the Black and saw Warranty Ends 2018 on the Black and Cyan.

I had both replaced by a new one.

I inserted the new black one (Warranty until 2027) and it showed me the same error that the Black is damaged. Just now I replaced the Cyan (also Warranty until 2027)  and it showed full Ink level. I removed the 2027 Black cleaned all the contacts and same message of damage. next step: I inserted the Black 2017 again and it said a used cartridge has been inserted updating printer. It showed full level. Then I wanted to print report. Suddenly error message Black has been damaged and on the Ink Level screen showed empty with an X. I removed the 2017 Black and reinserted the 2027 Black which always showed error. Now the printer accepted the black, it said again: a cartridge used before, updating, and then it showed full ink!  But my 2027 Cyan (which showed full before) suddenly shows empty and an X on top.

Sorry about this confusion, but I am also very confused.
