I have followed all troubleshooting  options, purchased a second black cartridge, and still get the same error message:

There is a problem with the printer or ink system

Any suggestions on getting this working again?

@kkc14, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to help resolve the “There is a problem with the printer or ink system” error on your HP printer, even after trying two new black ink cartridges:

Power Reset the Printer

  • Turn off the printer using the power button.
  • Unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet (avoid power strips).
  • Turn the printer back on.

Check Printer Level

  • Place a small round object (like a marble) on top of the printer.
  • If it rolls in any direction other than slightly back and left, the printer may not be level.
  • Adjust the printer until the object stays in place or rolls slightly back and left.

Remove and Reinsert Ink Cartridges

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove all cartridges, especially the black ones.
  • Check for:
    • Protective tape still on the cartridge.
    • Ink or debris on the electrical contacts.
  • Gently clean the contacts with a lint-free cloth and distilled water if needed.
  • Reinsert the cartridges firmly.

Clean Cartridge Vents

  • Use a pin to gently clear any clogged vents on top of the cartridge.
  • Ensure no glue or label residue is blocking the vent.

Try a Different Cartridge (if available)

  • If you have another new black cartridge, try installing it.
  • Ensure it’s a genuine HP cartridge.

Update Printer Firmware

  • Visit HP Support page and enter your printer model.
  • Download and install the latest firmware.

I tried everything you suggested, and am many hours and 2 very expensive black cartridges into just throwing this away and buying a new one.

Any last suggestions?  I am looking at Brother printers - monochrome -with toner instead of ink.  I only use black and white anyway, and have had to pay for colored ink all this time with this printer.

Maybe its best to just put it in the trash.
