HP DeskJet 2855e All-in-One Printer
macOS 11.0 Big Sur

After online troubleshooting, nothing works to get my printer to get out of validating mode.  It's the very first time I've changed my cartridge.  I opted out of the "ink smart" program since I bought this printer months ago and am only changing the black cartridge from the original that came with the printer.  I have unplugged from printer and wall, then changed outlet.  The color cartridge is still 3/4 full.   It's been hours.

@eahinthecity, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer stuck at validating!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like your HP DeskJet 2855e is stuck in "Validating" mode after installing a new black ink cartridge. Since you've already tried basic troubleshooting like unplugging the printer, switching outlets, and ensuring the color cartridge is still usable, here are some additional steps to try:

1. Check for Any Protective Stickers on the Cartridge

  • Ensure you've removed all plastic tabs or protective tape from the new black cartridge.
  • If the cartridge is not seated properly, remove it and reinstall it securely.

2. Power Reset the Printer

  • Unplug the printer while it's turned on.
  • Wait 5-10 minutes.
  • Plug it back in and power it on.

3. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Unplug the power and USB cables.
  • Hold the Power button for 30 seconds.
  • Reconnect everything and try again.

4. Clean the Ink Cartridge Contacts

  • Turn off the printer and remove the new black cartridge.
  • Use a lint-free cloth and a little distilled water or isopropyl alcohol to gently clean the copper contacts on the cartridge.
  • Let it dry for a few minutes, then reinstall it.

5. Update Firmware & Drivers

  • Go to HP’s Support Website and check for any available firmware updates for your printer model.
  • If you can, connect the printer to a PC and try updating it through the HP Smart app.

6. Use a Genuine HP Cartridge

  • If the cartridge is third-party or refilled, it may not be recognized correctly.
  • HP’s Ink Smart program may have locked the printer to use only HP Instant Ink cartridges.

7. Try Removing the Color Cartridge

  • If your printer supports single-cartridge mode, try removing the color cartridge and printing with just the black one.
  • If that works, it could be an issue with the color cartridge instead.

8. Factory Reset the Printer

  • Press and hold the Wireless + Cancel buttons for about 20 seconds (or until the printer restarts).
  • This resets the printer to factory default

Let me know if you need further help!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
