HP DeskJet 3733 All-in-One Printer

Hi HP Community, I bought a new 304XL black ink cartridge for my 3733 printer, and the machine doesn't want to read it.


I have attempted to clean the copper plates in the printer and on the cartridge. I have also tried the printer reset (turning it off, waiting 30 seconds, turning it back on). I reached out to HP Support on Twitter and confirmed the following:


How long have you been facing the issue? I bought the ink cartridge yesterday.

Were there any updates post which you started facing the issue? No

What is the status of the led lights of your printer(STEADY/BLINKING)? blinking

How are you trying to connect to the network(WIFI DIRECT/ROUTER/USB CABLE/ETHERNET CABLE)? WiFi

Which operating system are you using(IOS/WINDOWS/MAC/ANDROID)? Windows

Are you getting any error messages displayed on the screen?

The printer can read my old empty black 304 cartridge, and it reads my brand-new color 304 just fine.

When I swap in the new 304XL, however, the printer screen begins to flash and it reads *both* cartridges as empty.

When I reinput the old empty black 304, it shows that the color cartridge does have ink (and that, of course, this 304 black has none).


After talking with them, HP Support on Twitter said they ultimately couldn't help me because they only handle software issues, so does this mean that this is a hardware issue? As the printer can read my old cartridge, it seems to be a problem with the black 304XL.


Can someone please point me in the right direction? Thanks very much and I hope you have a great day.

Return the 304XL to the place of purchase to get a replacement 304 XL cartridge.
