30X HP Laserjet cartridge- Printed 916 of 3500 pages promised <10% toner remains.

Using an HP m203DW printer for word and pdf printing only for internal use.

Purchased a 30X HP High Capacity cartridge which promises ~3,500 pages of Black ink printing.

Suddenly -  Low Ink notification.

Checked the HP printer utility which shows the following with a cartridge installation date of 10/15/2020

• Total Pages Printed: 916
• Pages Remaining: 50
• Less than 10% of ink remaining

Toner use settings are correctly set - No high res. printing.

To recap:

The cartridge should print ~3,500 pages.  

We've printed 916 pages. We're getting a low toner notice to buy a new cartridge

Anyone else have this problem with HP 30X toner cartridges? What did you do?

I understand the ink runs out sooner than expected. There are a few things to prevent excess ink usage: 

• The printer should always be plugged into a live outlet.  If you use an external switch such as an outlet switch then more ink will be used at each startup. 

• Do not run cleaning cycles from the computer's toolbox or the printer's front panel.  These are rarely needed (perhaps once for each half dozen cartridges) and will use ink. 

• Printing in Draft mode may have acceptable quality while providing about 2x the pages of Normal or Best modes.   

Update the printer firmware
