HP OfficeJet 3830 All-in-One Printer

All was well until I replaced the black cartridge.  I received an error saying not properly installed and went through all suggested remedies. None worked, and now I am getting the same error with another  brand new hp cartridge. Any suggestions ? Time to get a new printer?

Thanks!

Hi @Katneedshelp2

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating to deal with that cartridge error after replacing it, especially when you’ve already tried all the usual fixes. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the issue with your HP 3830 printer:

Check the Cartridge for Protective Tape

  • New cartridges often come with a small piece of plastic tape covering the contact points (copper connectors). Make sure that you remove this tape before inserting the cartridge. If the tape is left on, the printer won’t recognize the cartridge properly, causing the "not properly installed" error.

2. Re-seat the Cartridge

  • Even if you’ve already done this, try removing the cartridge and carefully reinserting it to ensure it is seated properly in the cartridge slot.
  • Press down firmly until you hear it click into place.

3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts

  • Dirt or ink residue on the contacts of the cartridge or the printer can interfere with proper recognition. Use a soft, lint-free cloth lightly dampened with water (or rubbing alcohol) to clean the copper-colored contacts on both the cartridge and the printer’s cartridge slot.
  • Be gentle to avoid damaging the contacts.

4. Power Cycle the Printer

  • Turn off the printer, unplug it from the power source, and wait for about 30 seconds before plugging it back in and turning it on again.
  • This can reset the printer’s internal system and might help clear the error.

5. Check for Firmware Updates

  • Sometimes, firmware issues can cause problems with cartridge recognition.
  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer:
    1. Go to HP's Support website.
    2. Enter your printer model (HP 3830) and check for any available updates.

I hope this helps.
