HP Envy Inspire 7955e
macOS 12.0 Monterey

I recently purchased an HP Envy Inspire 7955e printer and I am having trouble printing borderless images.  Here is the issue:

  1. I crop an image to exactly 4x6.
  2. I print it to 4x6 photo paper using borderless printing (via HP Smart Software) and the printed photo has all four edges cropped.
  3. If I print the same image on 8.5 x 11 photo paper, the photo is printed exactly the same size as a piece of 4x6 photo paper, but without the cropping.

It seems the borderless feature causes the printer to enlarge the image when it is printed and then crops it.  But, when printed without borderless enabled, and printed on a larger piece of paper, the photo is printed exactly the same size (4x6), but without the cropping.  See the image below:

The  photo on the top was printed on the 8.5x11 paper and you can see that the top border does not crop out the insect's body.  The photo on the bottom is the borderless photo printed on the 4x6 paper.  Notice that the body of the insect along the top of the second photo has been cropped.

In both cases, the file printed ends up being exactly 4x6, but the image on the 4x6 paper is getting enlarged by the borderless feature and then cropped so the image fits in the 4x6 space.  On the 8.5x11 print, the image is also printed exactly 4x6 but without cropping it.

I am certain that they are both printed exactly 4x6 because I cut out the photo printed on the 8.5x11 photo paper and it is exactly the same size as the 4x6 photo.

I noticed that this issue was reported before by Paul_london and he needed a new printer with a software alignment update.  But his printer was an earlier model, so I would expect mine would have already had this update.

Any ideas how I can resolve this?

Thanks!

When printing borderless prints the driver will oversize the print slightly to avoid any white borders due to small variations in the paper handling.  In the past some drivers had the option to adjust the "Overspray".  Here is an example (from Windows) for the Deskjet 6980 driver:

There are a few options:

  • Print (3) 4x6 prints on Letter size photo paper and then trim to size.
  • It may be possible to use an older driver (such as the Officejet 6980 driver).  I am a Windows user so cannot give specifics for IOS, but in the Windows case I would do this be adding a printer using the same port as used by the Envy printer but specifying the Officejet 6980.

Thanks for the response.   I was not able to find the driver you mentioned for macOS.  Printing without borderless and then trimming will certainly work, but one of the reasons I purchased this printer was for the borderless feature.  If I can't get that to work, I will return the printer.

If there is anyone out there that has the HP Envy Inspire 7955e, it would be interesting to see if they can print this photo borderless without the cropping.  This will tell me if it is just my printer, or this is a universal issue with the printer.

The photo is attached is anyone wants to try it.
