I purchased a generic brand of ink with appropriate cartridge and successfully installed and used a few times. Now all of a sudden the printer is displaying empty ink cartridges, but they are definitely not all used yet. Have a feeling HP wants to keep a monopoly and have us buy branded only, but wondering if there is a fix for this. I tried cleaning, as support suggested, but that didn’t work. I do not want to drop another $30 on ink just because HP doesn’t want to accept the generic brand.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you. 

 

I see that you have an issue using non-HP ink cartridge that is showing low on your printer.

If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and you encounter any issue related to ink cartridges there is nothing much we can support on as HP recommends to use genuine HP ink cartridges for better performance and quality.

 

However, please follow the below steps to fix the issue.

 

A) Perform a power drain.

 

1) Take out the cartridges

2) Unplug the power cord from the printer & wall.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the printer and wall, ensure the printer is plugged into the wall & not into a surge protector.

5) Insert the cartridges back into the printer.

Remove the cartridges > Unplug the power cord > Wait for 30 seconds > Plug the power cord back in > Insert the cartridges

 

B) Kindly refer to the steps on this link to update the printer firmware and let me know if that resolves the issue.

 

C) If the issue still persists, you will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further.

I tried this several times. I ended up buying an HP branded ink and resolved the issue. Very disappointing, and honestly, illegal.

I understand your concern, If you are using generic or Non HP ink cartridges and the above steps do not help. You will have to contact the generic ink cartridge manufacturer to assist you further with it or you will have to use genuine HP ink cartridges to resume printing.
