@dlgator, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding 67XL Cartridge Errors on HP ENVY 6458e Printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

If you are encountering repeated cartridge errors with multiple new 67XL cartridges in your HP ENVY 6458e All-in-One Printer, follow these troubleshooting steps to try and resolve the issue:

Check the Cartridge Compatibility: Ensure that you are using the correct cartridge model for your HP ENVY 6458e printer. It should be a 67 or 67XL cartridge for this printer model.

Inspect the Cartridges and Contacts:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
  • Open the ink cartridge access door and remove the cartridges.
  • Check the cartridges for any protective tapes or packaging material that might still be attached.
  • Inspect the gold contacts on the cartridges and cartridge slots for any dirt or debris.
  • Use a lint-free cloth or cotton swab lightly moistened with distilled water to gently clean the contacts.

Reinsert the Cartridges:

  • After cleaning, reinsert the cartridges carefully into their respective slots. Ensure they are clicked into place correctly.

Reset the Printer:

  • Plug the printer back into the power source and turn it on.
  • Allow the printer to complete its startup process and check if the error persists.

Test with Another Cartridge: If the problem continues, try using another new cartridge. There might be an issue with the batch of cartridges you have.

Firmware Update: Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer and perform the update if necessary. Outdated firmware can sometimes cause compatibility issues.

I tried all those things, and using three different cartridges - still error message.

@dlgator, Thanks for giving those steps a shot — I know how frustrating it must feel, especially after trying three different cartridges. Let’s get this sorted.

Since you've already ruled out cartridge and contact issues, this might be deeper — possibly the printhead or the cartridge sensor inside the printer acting up. Here's what we can try next:

Full Power Reset:

Turn the printer on, if it isn’t already.

While it's powered on, unplug it from the wall and leave it unplugged for at least 60 seconds.

Plug it back in directly to a wall outlet (avoid surge protectors) and turn it on.

HP Smart App – Printer Health Report:

Open HP Smart on your phone or PC → Go to “Printer Reports” → Run a diagnostic.

Sometimes, this helps detect deeper issues and can push fixes.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

Thanks for the response.  I tried as suggested, but in HP Smart for me, the only options under Printer Reports are to print various reports, which it says it can't because of the cartridges.  I found a "Clean Printhead" option under Utilities/Print Quality Toolbox, and it said "Processing..." but it just kept saying that and nothing happened and then the app crashed.  Now when I try anything under the Utilities Toolbox, it says the printer is busy, even after restarting it again.
