replaced non hp cartridge which ran out of ink with genuine hp 902XL cartridge.  Now the printer says one or more cartridges are missing or damaged.  I've turned printer off and on....reseated all cartridges....reset printer....but have not upgraded printer.  Had to purchase genuine hp cartridge at higher cost and still not working.

Hi @tomb1952

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds frustrating that the printer still isn't recognizing the new HP cartridge, even though you've replaced it with a genuine one. Here are a few things you can try to resolve the issue:

Check Cartridge Contacts: Even with a new HP cartridge, sometimes the contacts between the cartridge and the printer can have debris or ink buildup. Gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridge and the printer with a lint-free cloth or cotton swab.

Check for Firmware Updates: Since you mentioned not upgrading the printer yet, it's possible the firmware could be outdated, especially if it was previously using a non-HP cartridge. You might want to check for any firmware updates through the printer’s settings or HP’s website.

Reset the Printer Again (Hard Reset):

  • Turn off the printer.
  • Unplug it from the power source for at least 30 seconds to a minute.
  • Plug it back in, and power the printer back on.

Reinstall Cartridges: If the error persists, try removing the cartridges again, ensuring that they are seated properly and securely. Sometimes they might look properly installed, but if they're even slightly misaligned, the printer won't recognize them.

Try a Different Cartridge Slot: Sometimes, a particular slot can have a malfunction. If possible, try swapping the cartridges to see if the issue persists with the same cartridge or if it's isolated to one particular slot.

Printer Diagnostic: Run a diagnostic on the printer, if your model has that feature, to check for cartridge or printer issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
