Hi @Scxxx,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

  • Do you remember enabling Cartridge Protection, or was it possibly enabled by default?
  • Are you using HP-branded ink cartridges, or are they third-party or refilled cartridges?
  • Did you recently replace the cartridges, and are you experiencing any specific error messages?
  • Is your printer connected to the internet, and is it using any web services like HP Instant Ink?
  • Are you familiar with accessing the printer’s settings through the Embedded Web Server (EWS) using a web browser?

Here’s how you can turn off Cartridge Protection on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8020:

Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS):

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
  • Find the printer's IP address by printing a Network Configuration Page (usually available in the printer’s settings menu under Network or Wireless settings).
  • Open a web browser on your computer and enter the printer’s IP address into the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.x.x).

Log into the Printer’s EWS:

  • Once in the EWS, click on the Settings tab at the top.
  • In the Settings menu, find and click on HP Cartridge Protection.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @Scxxx,

Please find the remaining steps below.

Disable Cartridge Protection:

  • Under the HP Cartridge Protection section, you should see options to turn Cartridge Protection on or off.
  • Select Disable Cartridge Protection or Turn Off and click Apply or Save Changes.

Restart the Printer:

  • After making the changes, restart your printer to ensure the new settings take effect.

Verify the Changes:

  • Check the printer's display or the EWS to ensure that Cartridge Protection is turned off.
  • Try printing a test page to confirm that the cartridges are working properly without protection enabled.

Use HP Smart App (Alternative Method):

  • Open the HP Smart app on your device and select your printer.
  • Navigate to Printer Settings, then select Advanced Settings or Printer Maintenance.
  • Look for the Cartridge Protection settings and turn it off if available.

If you do not see the option to turn off Cartridge Protection, or if it’s grayed out, contact HP Phone support for further assistance.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance
