Very old printer (10+ years)- connected to internet/networking (win10)
Don't print a lot - ran out of ink, replaced with ~3 year old but brand new/unused official hp ink (from amazon) - no refills no weird sellers - official ink. Except it sat around for 3 years in a drawer.
Replaced ink and got message "ink cartridge not compatible with this printer' - Verify it's the correct item, ala 950xl (recently replaced the colors 951's and those all worked fine) - still getting the same message - can replace with old/empty and message goes away. Needed to print - figure I'll try the other spare ink (usually keep 2) - it's maybe 2 years old and it works but prints horribly, smudging, blank pages...so I kind of assume that the ink expired - seems shady AF but it is HP.
Anyway neither of the old ink's work - it's a business computer (someone else footing the bill) so screw it, order 2 more brand new ones. They both have dates/warranty periods into 2025 - so they're new - same model # - no funky sellers or refills - GENUINE HP CARTRIDGES - pop one in this morning SAME MESSAGE. And not going to try the 2nd newest one, as I'd like to return them - which I can't do once you've used them DESPITE THEM NOT WORKING
Support (through online research - of course can't get HELP with this without PAYING shady AF company) - but one document rattled on about leave unpowered, replace with old, and then swap with new - followed all that and no luck - also no way to 'swap' old cartridges while off as the door must be closed and the ink tanks slide off to the right and unable to be replaced if you stick paper in the door closed switch. Anyway, it failed - the printer indicated 'incompatible cartridge'.
I'm not going to keep feeding this printer new ink purchases if they're not going to work - so I'm looking for workarounds that I can perform - I've purchased a brother printer - because F-YOU hp you're NEVER getting my business again.
But I suspect there is a fix I'm unable to find and I'm reaching out to this helpful community that might be able to keep this printer alive.
How do I stop this message: The ink cartridge is incompatible with this printer. (it's NOT, it's the correct model this is some sort of 'electronics lockout' that I intend to well inform the public about on reddit - in an effort to remind other consumers of how horrible a company they are. That said..the printer was printing beautifully when the ink ran out - so it's not 'something wrong with the printer' - it's some sort of SHADY AF lock that HP has implemented to force it's customers away (great thinking).
I'm not against refilling the old cart that does work - I do have drills and syringes but have never tried it before. I'm sure there's some way to disengage whatever lock they're added and/or override it to use these (now 4) new but not working though correct cartridges. Is it a driver update or a firmware update that's needed?
While I can accept that old cartridges might not function properly (dried ink, clogs, etc...one did do that) - brand new ones just ordered should WORK PROPERLY - and I shouldn't have to PAY HP to 'support' that issue.
I appreciate any help someone can offer.
Thank you.
