Hi @Schmat

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I Understand that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 displays a "Supply System Problem" or "Supply Issue" message even after installing new cartridges and performing a hard reset, I would reqeust you to please share me the picture of the error displayed. Meanwhile please follow the troubleshooting steps below:

Step 1: Verify the Ink Cartridges

  • Ensure you are using genuine HP 952/952XL ink cartridges compatible with the HP OfficeJet Pro 8710.
  • Remove each cartridge and inspect it for any remaining protective tape or packaging.
  • Reinstall each cartridge firmly until it clicks into place.

Step 2: Perform a Power Reset

  • Turn the printer on.
  • Disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer while it is powered on.
  • Unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug the power cord directly into a wall outlet and reconnect it to the printer.
  • Turn the printer on and check if the message clears.

Step 3: Clean the Cartridge and Carriage Contacts

  • Open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove all ink cartridges.
  • Using a lint-free cloth lightly dampened with distilled water, gently clean:
  • The copper-colored contacts on each cartridge.
  • The corresponding electrical contacts inside the carriage.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely.
  • Reinstall the cartridges and close the access door.

Step 4: Update the Printer Firmware

  • Connect the printer to the internet.
  • From the printer control panel, go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Update the Printer (if available).
  • Alternatively, use the HP Smart app to check for and install any available firmware updates.

Step 5: Check for Printer Updates Using HP App https://www.hp.com/us-en/hp-app/overview.html

  • Open the HP App on your computer or mobile device.
  • Ensure the printer is detected.
  • Install any pending printer updates and restart the printer.

Step 6: Restore Factory Defaults

  • From the printer control panel, navigate to:
  • Setup > Printer Maintenance > Restore or Restore Factory Defaults.
  • Follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Reconfigure the printer after the reset.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thank you Pallipurath for your response and several suggestions to fix the supply system issue.  I read and followed each of those steps many many times, to hard reset, to take cartridges out and back in, to reseat the carriage, to clean the contacts, etc, but nothing has solved the problem.  I put in brand new HP 952 cartridges and the message still remains.  It is disappointing that all these suggestions did not fix the problem and I can not print anything and spent $180.00 for the 4 pack of printer ink 952XL   Very expensive and not fixed.  The printer message is still There is a problem with the supply system.  Try replacing the affected cartridge with a different non-empty cartridge-  I did with brand new Genuine HP Ink Cartridges.

Hi @Schmat

Thank you for responding.

I understand that you have already performed the basic troubleshooting (hard reset, reseating the cartridges, cleaning the contacts, and installing a new set of genuine HP 952XL cartridges), the next steps are to isolate whether the issue is with the printhead or the printer hardware.

Step 1: Check the Printhead

  • Turn the printer ON.
  • Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to stop moving.
  • Remove all four ink cartridges.
  • Lift the printhead latch and carefully remove the printhead.
  • Inspect the printhead for:
  • Damaged or bent electrical contacts.
  • Ink buildup or debris on the contacts.
  • If any protective packaging is still present (for a replacement printhead), remove it.
  • Reinstall the printhead securely and lock the latch.
  • Reinstall all cartridges and close the access door.

Step 2: Clean the Printhead Contacts

  • Remove the printhead again.
  • Using a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water, gently clean:
  • The copper-colored electrical contacts on the printhead.
  • The corresponding contacts inside the printer carriage.
  • Allow the contacts to dry completely for 5–10 minutes.
  • Reinstall the printhead and cartridges.

Step 3: Perform a Semi-Full Reset

  1. Leave the printer powered on.
  2. Access the printer's Support Menu (if available for your model).
  3. Perform a Semi-Full Reset.
  4. Allow the printer to restart and complete initialization.

Step 4: Update the Printer Firmware

  1. Connect the printer to the internet or your computer.
  2. Open the HP Smart app or visit the HP Support website.
  3. Check for any available firmware updates.
  4. Install the update and restart the printer.

Hope this helps, Please revert if the issue persists.

Have a good day.
