Hi @Oakley4,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740 Wide Format All-In-One Printer is not recognizing your new 952XL black cartridges and indicating they are empty despite being new, try the following troubleshooting steps:
Check the Cartridge and Printer Contacts
- Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source.
- Remove the new cartridge from the printer.
- Inspect the cartridge for any plastic seals or tape that may not have been removed during installation.
- Check the copper-colored contacts on the cartridge for any dirt, debris, or ink residue. Clean gently with a lint-free cloth and distilled water if necessary.
- Inspect the printer's cartridge holder contacts for any visible damage or ink residue. Clean these contacts gently as well.
Reset the Printer
- Reinsert the cartridge securely into the printer.
- Plug the printer back in and turn it on.
- Perform a hard reset by unplugging the power cord from the back of the printer while it is on. Wait 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn the printer on.
Update the Printer Firmware Update the firmware on an HP printer
- Check for firmware updates on the HP support website for your printer model.
- Download and install any available updates to ensure compatibility with the new cartridges.
Reset the Ink Cartridge
- Remove the cartridge again and then turn off the printer.
- Unplug the printer from the power source for at least 10 minutes.
- Reinstall the cartridge and turn the printer back on.
Use Genuine HP Cartridges
- Ensure the cartridge is genuine HP and not a remanufactured or third-party cartridge.
- If possible, try another genuine HP 952XL black cartridge to see if the issue persists.
Printer Diagnostics
- Print a diagnostic page from the printer's settings menu to check for any error codes or messages related to the cartridge.
- Run any built-in printer maintenance tools available through the printer's menu or the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
