My printer has original cartridges as I bought 4 months ago and haven’t used it much.  No low ink or depleted cartridges.  Have literally printed two sheets of paper, last use about 3 months ago and no issues.  Walk into home office to see message telling me I have depleted cartridges on all my color cartridges.  I am only person in house, no one else can use printer.  I printed black and white when I used it.  Never used color.   Shut unit off, restarted, checked settings, removed and reinstalled cartridges.  Same message.  Bought new and expensive HP brand cartridges directly from HP.  Installed them.  New message does not recognize new cartridges as HP and will not allow use.  Wonderful HP support has been zero help.   Installed old cartridges I never used and now says it was depleted but ink levels indicate a refill and will not allow use.  (You can refill?)  Reinstalled new ones again, won’t recognize still.  Basically I’ve got a $600 brick in my office I’d like to use.  Any help appreciated.

@Fletch420, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Ink Cartridge Recognition Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

It sounds like you are encountering issues with your HP printer not recognizing your ink cartridges, despite them being genuine HP cartridges. Here are several steps to troubleshoot and resolve this problem:

Check Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure that all ink cartridges are correctly installed. Sometimes a cartridge might not be properly seated, causing the printer to not recognize it.
  • To reinstall the cartridges, open the printer's cartridge access door, remove the cartridges, and then reinsert them firmly into their slots.

Clean the Cartridge Contacts:

  • Sometimes, ink deposits or dust on the cartridge contacts or the printer’s contacts can cause recognition issues. Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the electrical contacts on the cartridges and the printer.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source. Wait for about 10 seconds, then plug it back in and turn it on. Allow the printer to reboot completely.

Install Firmware Updates:

  • Check if there are any firmware updates available for your printer. You can check this by visiting the HP support site and searching for your printer model.

Reset the Printer:

  • A printer reset can sometimes clear error messages. Turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, wait for about 60 seconds, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

Replace the Cartridges:

  • If the above steps do not resolve the issue, consider replacing the ink cartridges with new, genuine HP cartridges. While it seems unlikely given your description, it’s possible there could be an issue with the cartridges themselve

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
