I accidentally purchased a pack of color ink replacement cartridges (3 in one) for HP 952. What I actually needed was 962 😭. Unfortunately, I already opened the package and didn't notice it was the wrong type until I couldn't get it loaded in my printer.
Am I just SOL? I don't have the receipt for the ink replacement, but I got it from Staples. The ink cartridges are still in perfect shape (I didn't try to force them in), and they've never been used. But I doubt the store is going to let me return an opened ink package.
Any suggestions welcome, these ink cartridges are not cheap!
Thanks
Barry Jones

Hi @bjones1435,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.
Thank you for reaching out to HP Support. We understand how disappointing it can feel to open a new ink pack with the excitement of printing, only to discover it doesn't fit your printer. The frustration is real, especially when it involves a mix-up between similar cartridge types like HP 952 and HP 962, which can look and feel nearly identical at a glance.
Unfortunately, these two cartridge families are not cross-compatible, as they are designed for different printer models and contain distinct chip and fitment specifications. It’s a common mix-up, and we completely understand how it can happen.
That said, because the cartridge was purchased through Staples, HP is unable to process a return, refund, or exchange directly, even if the cartridges remain unused and in pristine condition. All returns must be handled by the original point of sale, as per our warranty and sales policies.
We strongly recommend that you:
- Bring the opened package and cartridges back to the Staples store where the purchase was made so the store can check and help you better.
I hope this helps.
Take care, and have an amazing day!
