I have an HP Smart Tank 7602. I accidentally filled the yellow ink tank with sublimation ink (grabbed the wrong bottle from the shelf), it wasn't until after I made two prints on glossy sticker paper that it dawned on me that I used the wrong bottle). What should I do next? Is it possible to drain the ink - it's only in one tank - and refill with the proper HP ink that I have?
Thank you for any assistance!

Hi @Mrsdonna1955,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you have accidentally using sublimation ink in the HP Smart Tank 7602’s yellow ink tank can be problematic, as sublimation ink is designed for use with specific types of printers and paper, not for inkjet printers like yours.
Here’s what you should do next:
- Drain the Ink Tank: You can drain the incorrect sublimation ink from the yellow tank. To do this, you can either use the printer’s cleaning function or carefully remove the ink tank and try to drain it manually by tilting it over a disposable container. Be cautious, as sublimation ink can stain.
- Clean the Ink Lines: To ensure there is no residual sublimation ink left in the system, it’s essential to flush the ink lines. This might require running the printer’s cleaning cycle multiple times to try and expel any remaining ink. If the cleaning cycles aren’t enough, you can manually clean the ink lines by gently cleaning the cartridge and surrounding areas with a lint-free cloth soaked in warm water (but be very careful not to damage any parts).
- Refill with the Correct Ink: Once the sublimation ink is removed and the system is cleaned, refill the yellow ink tank with the proper HP ink that’s designed for your printer. Make sure not to mix the sublimation ink with the regular ink.
- Test the Printer: After refilling, run a test print to see if everything looks good. It’s possible that the print quality might be affected at first due to any residual sublimation ink in the system, but with some cleaning and flushing, this should improve.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
