After installing a new magenta cartridge, the message says I have a Supply System Problem, and the printer will not print.  I thought it was the cartridge, so I tried another full one and got the same message.  I even went out and bought a new cartridge and got the same message.  How can this be corrected?  I need this printer for business.

Hi @JoanEllen1234,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

We understand how urgent this is, especially when your printer is essential for your business. The “Supply System Problem” message on your HP OfficeJet Pro 8720 after inserting a new magenta cartridge can point to a hardware issue in the ink delivery system, cartridge contact failure, or a printhead-related fault, even if the cartridge is genuine.

Here’s how to troubleshoot and potentially resolve it:

1. Power Reset

  • Turn on the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cable from the back without turning off the printer.
  • Wait 60 seconds.
  • Plug it directly into a wall outlet, not a surge protector.
  • Power it back on.

2. Check the Cartridge Area

  • Open the printer’s cartridge access door.
  • Remove the magenta cartridge.
  • Look inside for:
    • Ink buildup or residue
    • Bent or misaligned cartridge chip contacts or ink nozzles
    • Any torn packaging or protective tape left behind

💡 Gently clean the gold contact chip on the cartridge and the cartridge slot inside the printer with a lint-free cloth and a small amount of isopropyl alcohol.

3. Reinstall All Cartridges

  • Reinsert the magenta cartridge carefully.
  • Reinsert all other cartridges too — sometimes the issue is caused by incorrect seating of neighbouring cartridges.
  • Close the lid and wait for initialization.

4. Firmware Update (Important)

A firmware glitch may cause supply detection issues.

🔄 Download the latest firmware:

Be sure to connect via USB or network and follow the update instructions carefully.

5. Check Cartridge Type

  • Ensure you're using genuine HP 952 or 952XL cartridges.
  • Counterfeit or refilled cartridges often cause “Supply System” errors, even if brand new.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
