After replacing the  black ink cartridge in my HP Deskjet 6980 printer, it continues to print in orange.  Google searches indicate the print heads may be clogged and need to be cleaned.  I cannot find any specific directions on how to do this.

Hi @johnab99,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Deskjet 6980 printer is printing in orange after replacing the black ink cartridge, there are a few things you can try to troubleshoot the issue.

  • Check the ink levels: Make sure the ink cartridges have enough ink in them. Go to the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app on your computer or smartphone to check the ink levels.
  • Run a print head cleaning: Sometimes, ink can get clogged in the print head, which can cause the printer to print in the wrong color. Run a print head cleaning from the printer's control panel or the HP Smart app to see if that fixes the issue.
  • Check the ink cartridge: Make sure that the new black ink cartridge is installed correctly and is the correct one for your printer model.
  • Check the printer settings: Ensure that the printer settings are set to print in black and white, and not in color.
  • Reset the printer: If none of the above steps work, try resetting the printer to its default settings. You can usually do this from the printer's control panel or through the HP Smart app.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
