I have a HP Officejet 6978 and have purchased new cartridges that are not compatible. I was instructed to go to the settings and turn off the firmware upgrade function in printer settings to allow the usage of the cartridges. I am unable to find this setting and need assistance.

Hi @Jaunise

Welcome to the HP support community.

I understand you're experiencing an issue with your HP device, and I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. I'm here to help you today.

To disable the firmware upgrade function on your HP OfficeJet 6978 and allow the use of third-party ink cartridges, follow these steps:

  1. Access the Printer Settings:
    • Make sure your printer is powered on and connected to your network.
    • On the printer's control panel, tap the Wireless icon and the Setup or Settings icon (usually a gear symbol).
  2. Navigate to Printer Settings:
    • In the settings menu, look for Printer Maintenance or Advanced Settings. This may vary depending on the software version.
    • From here, search for an option related to Firmware Updates, Automatic Updates, or Network Update.
  3. Disable Firmware Updates:
    • If the firmware update option is listed, select it and disable it or turn off automatic updates.
    • If you cannot find it, try accessing the printer's settings through the HP Smart app or the HP Web Services page by entering the printer’s IP address in your web browser.
  4. Use HP's "Cartridge Protection" Feature:
    • Additionally, you can check if there’s an option for Cartridge Protection in the settings, which can also interfere with third-party cartridges. If available, disable this as well.
  5. Printer Software on PC:
    • If the settings aren’t directly accessible via the printer’s control panel, try using the HP Printer Assistant on your PC. Open the software and look for an option to turn off automatic firmware updates.

If you still cannot locate the setting, it's possible that the firmware has already been updated to block third-party cartridges.

NOTE: HP does not recommend disabling firmware updates or using third-party ink, as it may damage the printer or affect performance, and could void your warranty.

I hope this helps! Keep me posted.
