HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer - N911g
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

My 951XL Magenta Ink Cartridge ran out of ink as indicated by the printer.  I have bought 3 new HP 951XL Magenta Ink Cartridges from Walmart and each time the printer recognizes a genuine cartridge.  Then it reports that the cartridge appears to be damaged.  I followed the instructions to unplug the printer for 60 seconds but got the same error.  The message on the computer screen is

Ink Cartridge Failure

--951XL Z10 Magenta

Cartridges listed above are damaged or have failed

Remove them and replace with new cartridges

I had this problem a year ago with the black and it took 4 or 5 tries with new cartridges.  Why is this happening?  What can I do?

Hi @Gideon67,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I understand you are facing an ink cartridge issue with your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.

To assist better:

  • Was there any recent update on the printer prior to the issue?

While you respond to that, Let's perform a power drain:

  • With the printer turned on, disconnect the power cord from the rear of the printer and also unplug the power cord from the wall outlet.
  • Remove USB cable, if present.
  • Wait for 2-3 minutes, press and hold the power button on your printer for about 30 seconds to remove any additional charge.
  • Now plug back the power cable straight to a wall outlet without any surge protector or an extension cord (This is important) and then plug back the power cord to the printer.
  • Turn on the printer and wait till warm-up period finishes and the printer is idle

Update the printer firmware

  • Click here to download and install the latest printer firmware from your product

If the issue persists, then please follow the steps mentioned in this document:  HP Inkjet printers - Ink cartridge errors

I have been unable to work on the printer for a while.  Just noticed your response.  I ordered a complete set of print cartridges directly from HP.  I installed the Magenta 951XL and got the same error message: " INK CARTRIDGE FAILURE -951XL Z10 Magenta.  Cartridges listed above are damaged or have failed.  Remove them and replace with new cartridges."

I cleaned the electric contacts on the cartridge and the print head.

I tried to update the firmware but when I got to select the printer which it listed, I could not make a check in the box?

Really frustrated.
