Hi @KimberlyD2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your printer!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Follow these steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

1. Check Ink Cartridge Installation:

  • Ensure the black ink cartridge is correctly installed in its slot. It should click into place securely.

2. Reset the Printer:

  • With the printer turned on, unplug the power cord from the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Wait for about 60 seconds, then plug the power cord back into the printer and the wall outlet.
  • Turn the printer back on.

3. Clean Ink Cartridges and Printhead:

  • Turn the printer on and open the ink cartridge access door.
  • Remove the black ink cartridge.
  • The copper-colored contacts on the cartridges might be dirty or have some ink residue. Clean them with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water.
  • Additionally, clean the contacts inside the printhead.
  • Reinsert the ink cartridge, ensuring it is firmly in the correct slot.

4. Run a Printhead Cleaning:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Settings or Setup menu.
  • Select Tools or Printer Maintenance.
  • Choose Clean Printhead or Clean Cartridges and run the cleaning tool.
  • If defects persist on the test page, run up to two additional cleaning cycles.

5. Perform an Alignment:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Settings or Setup menu.
  • Select Tools or Printer Maintenance.
  • Choose Align Printer and run the alignment tool.

6. Update Printer Firmware:

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date. You can check for updates on the HP support website.

7. Check Ink Levels:

  • On the printer’s control panel, check the ink levels. Make sure the black ink cartridge is not defective or empty.

8. Replace the Ink Cartridge (If necessary):

  • If the issue persists and you suspect that the black ink cartridge may be defective, consider replacing it with another new cartridge.
