Hello. I owe the HP A9102 2800 and just today changed the black ink cartridge. The printer is printing oddly and it seems it is not detecting the black ink as it should. The cartridge was installed correctly. Please help.

@Mac1101, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding HP Printer Ink Cartridge Issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

When experiencing issues with a newly installed black ink cartridge, follow these steps to resolve the problem:

Check Ink Cartridge Installation

Ensure the black ink cartridge is correctly installed:

  1. Verify the cartridge is seated properly in its slot.
  2. Ensure the cartridge label matches the slot label.
  3. Confirm correct orientation: the arrow on the front of the cartridge should face upwards.

Check Cartridge Status

Examine the cartridge status on the printer's front panel:

  1. Access the printer’s ink management tool via the embedded web server or HP Utility.
  2. Check the status messages:
    • OK: Cartridge is working normally.
    • Reseat: Cartridge is not responding, remove, and reinsert it.
    • Replace: Cartridge is identified as faulty, replace it.

Clean the Printhead

If the cartridge status is okay but printing issues persist, clean the printhead:

  1. Load letter, A4, or legal unused plain white paper into the main input tray.
  2. From the printer control panel, navigate to Setup > Tools > Clean Printhead.

Align the Printhead

Align the printhead to resolve any print quality issues:

  1. Load unused white paper into the main input tray.
  2. On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Tools > Align Printer.

Ink Level Check

Verify the ink levels:

  1. If the estimated ink levels are low, replace the cartridge to avoid overheating the printhead.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!
