I have put in a new black ink cartridge and it won’t print, black copy doesn’t work either. The colour works fine, just not black. I’ve reinstalled the printer, and I’ve cleaned and aligned the printer heads (several times). I’ve also cleaned the copper touch points with lint free cloth (as recommended on here) but the printer still won’t print black ink. Also tested to see if the cartridge was blocked, plenty of ink came out of the cartridge onto the lint free cloth, so it’s not blocked. I’m on the instant ink plan so I don’t have another ink cartridge to swap it out with, can someone please help.

Hi @Lloyd_UK22,
Welcome to the HP Support Community
I understand you are facing a print quality issue with your HP Printer. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to resolve the issue.
To assist better:
- Does the copy print out the same way?
- What's the application you are trying to print from?
- Have you tried printing from a different application or device?
While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.
You may also refer to this document with steps to fix the " Print Quality Issues" issue applicable to your printer - Print Quality Issues
Also, try updating the printer's firmware - HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
If the issue still persists, we would need some information related to your Instant Ink Subscription. This information cannot be shared on a public post.
I have sent you a private message, reply to the message with your details.

Hi to answer your questions…
- Does the copy print out the same way? Yes it does
- What's the application you are trying to print from? The HP smart app for iPhones
- Have you tried printing from a different application or device? No I don’t have another device to use.
I have already printed several print quality diagnostic pages and they are all the same even after the cleaning and alignment programmes. I have also checked the printer firmware and it is all up to date.
I have also sent you my details via private message.
