Hi @Norm1989,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I am sorry to hear that your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is not recognizing the new and original black HP 954 cartridge, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot the issue

Verify Cartridge Authenticity:

  • Ensure that the black HP 954 cartridge is genuine. You can usually confirm this through the packaging and the security label.

Reinstall the Cartridge:

  • Open the printer to access the cartridge area.
  • Remove the black cartridge and reinsert it, ensuring it clicks into place securely.

Check for Obstructions:

  • Inspect the cartridge slot and the cartridge contact points for any debris or ink buildup.
  • Clean the electrical contacts on both the cartridge and the printer with a lint-free cloth lightly moistened with distilled water. Allow them to dry completely before reinserting the cartridge.

Firmware Update:

  • Check for firmware updates for your printer model on the HP Support website. Sometimes updates address compatibility and recognition issues with cartridges.

Reset the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cord.
  • Wait about one minute, then reconnect the power and turn the printer back on.

Print Head Cleaning:

  • Use your printer’s maintenance menu to run a print head cleaning cycle, which can sometimes resolve recognition issues related to ink flow.

Regional Compatibility:

  • Ensure that your printer and cartridges are compatible with the region you are currently in, as regional settings can affect cartridge recognition.

Take care and have an amazing day!
