Hi @RPS-DGH,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I know how frustrating it is when your printer seems to be working color prints fine, but black ink just refuses to show up, especially after installing a new Instant Ink cartridge. You're doing the right thing by trying alignment and cleaning, and I’m here to help you.

Steps to Fix Black Ink Not Printing on HP OfficeJet Pro 6978

1. Double-Check the Cartridge Installation

  • Make sure the black cartridge is firmly seated in its slot.
  • Remove and reinsert it to ensure proper contact.
  • Check for any orange tape or protective film that might still be on the cartridge.

2. Run All Three Levels of Printhead Cleaning

Sometimes one cleaning cycle isn’t enough:

  • On the printer’s touchscreen, go to:
    • Setup > Printer Maintenance > Clean Printhead
  • Repeat the cleaning up to three times if needed.
  • Wait 30 minutes before repeating the full cycle again if the issue persists.

3. Check Ink Levels and Cartridge Vent

  • Tap the Ink icon on the printer screen to view estimated levels.
  • If the black cartridge is full, inspect the vent hole on top of the cartridge.
  • Use a pin to gently clear any blockage if needed.

4. Try a Test Print from Another App

  • Sometimes the issue is with the document or app.
  • Try printing a simple text file from Notepad or WordPad.

5. Replace the Cartridge (if under warranty)

If the black cartridge is still not printing:

  • Check the “Warranty Ends” date printed on the cartridge.
  • If it’s still under warranty, you may be eligible for a free replacement from HP Instant Ink.

6. Replace the Printhead (Last Resort)

If all else fails, the printhead may be clogged or defective:

  • You can order a replacement printhead (CR322A or CR324A, depending on region).
  • HP provides a kit with setup cartridges and instructions.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
