Buying Ink without the Instaink

I have an HP office Jet pro 6978 printer that I got from my father-in-law. This printer has been a hassle to set up from the very beginning. We finally got it set-up but I do NOT like the whole insta-ink idea. We have to select a plan with how many pages per month despite of how much ink we may have in the printer. If we go over, we get charged extra. I don't like being charged monthly for the ink per pages. IS there ink cartridges that I can purchase without it being insta ink? I would rather not deal with the hassle of that. I just want ink that I can use in my printer when I want and not worry about getting a monthly charge for printing x amount of pages.

Instant Ink is an optional subscription service.

If your father-in-law is still around and able to do so, he can easily cancel the subscription contract.

Should cancelling the contract not be possible for any reason, you'll need an HP agent to assist removing the account and contract.

The information below includes information on how to cancel the subscription and contact information should it be needed.

Reminder

The Instant Ink subscription cartridges ONLY work with an active subscription.

After the contract is terminated, all Instant Ink / subscription cartridges should be removed from the printer and -- ideally -- returned to HP.  The service to return the cartridges to HP is free.

Purchase a new set of HP cartridges and install the cartridges.

How do I know what ink cartridges to buy that are not associated with the instant ink? I can cancel the service myself but need to know what to buy.  Will the printer work without a subscription?
