Hi @Gardenman2,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query.

I understand that you would like to Bypass the requirement to use setup cartridges in HP printers, such as the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus, is generally not recommended or supported by HP. Setup cartridges are required during the initial setup process to properly initialize the printer and ensure optimal performance.

Confirm Cartridge Type

  • The 8600 Plus requires HP 950 (black) and HP 951 (cyan, magenta, yellow) setup cartridges for first‑time initialization.
  • After setup is complete, you can use regular HP 950/951 cartridges.

Check Packaging

  • Setup cartridges are usually labeled “SETUP” on the box or cartridge itself.
  • If you only have standard cartridges, the printer will show “Use Setup Cartridges.”

Complete Setup

  • Insert all setup cartridges.
  • Follow the on‑screen prompts to finish initialization.

Take care and have an amazing day!
