NOTE: I have never used any ink product but HP Genuine Cartridges in my HP 7740.(S/N: CN7BM25 0NJ Product #G5J38A)
I recently got this message on the printer screen: THIS PRINTER IS NOT DESIGNED TO USE CONTINUOUS INK SYSTEMS. TO RESUME PRINTING REMOVE CONTINUOUS INK SYSTEM AND INSTALL ORIGINAL HP (OR COMPATIBLE CARTRIDGE.
I have never used anything but genuine HP-manufactured cartridges. The screen showed: CARTRIDGE PROBLEM (and K and Yellow) THE INDICATED CARTRIDGES ARE NOT COMMUNICATING CORRECTLY WITH THE PRINTER. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS REPLACE THE CARTRIDGE.
I purchased another HP 952XL BLACK and the HP 952 Yellow and replaced them.
When I tried the printer again, the same CONTINUOUS INK SYSTEM messages showed up and I still am unable to use my printer. I spend about $100 a month on Genuine HP Ink for my printer as I am a Community Newsletter editor.
I have tried all the HP recommended stuff. Reset, unplug, clean head but nothing gets rid of this CONTINUOUS INK CARTRIDGE PROBLEM.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO????

@Thom82, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding your cartridge problem!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Since you've only used genuine HP cartridges and have already tried the standard troubleshooting steps, here are a few additional things you can do to resolve the issue:
Check Cartridge Authenticity Again
Even though you've purchased HP-branded cartridges, double-check their authenticity using the HP Smart app or by verifying the security label on the cartridge packaging. Counterfeit cartridges can sometimes cause this issue.
Update Printer Firmware
- Outdated firmware might mistakenly detect genuine cartridges as part of a continuous ink system.
- Visit HP's official website and check for any available firmware updates for your HP OfficeJet Pro 7740.
- Install the latest firmware and restart the printer.
Check the Cartridge Contacts
Since the error mentions communication issues:
- Power off the printer.
- Remove the affected cartridges.
- Gently wipe the cartridge's chip contacts (the golden dots) with a lint-free cloth and isopropyl alcohol.
- Do the same for the corresponding contacts inside the printer.
- Reinsert the cartridges and restart the printer.
Use Different Genuine HP Cartridges
Even though you already replaced the black and yellow cartridges, try swapping them again (especially if they're from the same batch). Sometimes, a defective batch of cartridges causes recurring issues.
Disable HP Cartridge Protection (If Enabled)
- If enabled, HP Cartridge Protection may be restricting the use of even genuine cartridges.
- Go to Printer Settings via the HP Smart app or printer’s web interface.
- Look for HP Cartridge Protection and disable it.
- Restart the printer.
I hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!
