Replaced old Black cartridge which was registering as empty. Brand new genuine HP 62 replacement cartridge- printer throws CARTRIDGE PROBLEM- remove and reinstall ensuring correctly installed.
Old cartridge replaces nil issue- it just doesn’t have any ink to print.
Run all the suggestions- turn unit off, clean terminals, etc but same CARTRIDGE PROBLEM when trying to install new cartridge. NIL issue when re-installing old cartridge. It just doesn’t print because the ink is empty.
Have replaced colour and colour prints fine.
Device firmware is updated.
Seemingly unrelated, but you don’t know what you don’t know- there is a “tail” of white ribbon floating free on rhs of printhead- see pic. Is this normal?
I wouldn’t expect it would explain why the printer doesn’t accept the new but accepts the old cartridge though.

Hi @BradMnz
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like you're dealing with a frustrating cartridge issue on your HP OfficeJet 200. Here are some steps to help you troubleshoot the "CARTRIDGE PROBLEM" message when installing the new black cartridge:
1. Check Cartridge Compatibility
- Ensure that the HP 62 cartridge is compatible with your OfficeJet 200. Sometimes, even genuine cartridges can be incompatible if they are the wrong type or have been improperly manufactured.
2. Inspect the Cartridge
- Check the new cartridge for any protective tape or seals that may not have been removed. Sometimes, small pieces of tape can prevent proper contact.
- Look for any visible damage or defects on the cartridge itself.
3. Clean the Cartridge Contacts
- While you mentioned cleaning the terminals, it’s important to ensure both the cartridge contacts and the printer contacts are clean.
- Use a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water to gently clean the copper contacts on both the cartridge and the printer.
4. Reseat the Cartridge
- Carefully remove the new cartridge and reinstall it, ensuring it clicks into place securely. Sometimes, reseating it can help establish a better connection.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Frustratingly- it was the cartridge. I managed to persuade the retailer that we had carried out all other checks and possible remediative actions, and that the next step is to rule out the cartridge itself. They gave me another brand new cartridge (remember, the one that was reading as a cartridge problem was brand new), and voila- machine hasld no problem progressing with aligning and printing test page. 🤩😎
