At last a solution.  Get the printer to print in color only.  As soon as the cartridge moves to what you suspect is the opening  (because the door must be closed to print) pull the power plug and stop it in its tracks.  If not fully in opening lift top lid and you can freely move the carrier to the opening.

@IdyJohn
Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.

Don't worry as I'll be glad to help,

I understand you are getting this error on the printer. If you have already performed the steps from the document ink cartridge error: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c04100778  and the issue persists, it could be a hardware failure.

Please reach out to HP Support in your region regarding the service options for your printer. HP Support can be reached by clicking on the following link: www.hp.com/contacthp/

Hope this helps!

I'm having the same issue - the printer is not showing any errors.  It just keeps saying an ink cartridge needs to be replaced, yet the carrier won't move so I can replace the cartridge.

I tried unplugging the printer - it did not fix anything.  The printer is just over 1 year old, so no warranty.  I expect my printers to last more than a year!  I see multiple people posting this problem - I really hope HP has a fix for this other than saying get the printer serviced.  Which is almost as much as a new printer!

I took it to the Geek squad.  They just plugged in the  machine a couple of times and the carrier moved.  Since the carrier moved I replaced yellow..  Now printer wants B, but carrier won't move again.

How Strange?

How did you get yours to print?  Mine won't print because it says no ink/toner.  I've tried printing black only (that cartridge has ink) and in color - neither will work to move the cartridge carrier.

I have the same issue!  It started on Sept 30, 2021.  The Carriage that holds the ink cartridges will not move and I cannot replace the empty (yellow) ink.  However, your 'fix' did not work for me, so I set the machine to print in 'greyscale' - no luck.

I just spent 90 min with support.

I restored my printer out of frustration for not being able to print for 5 days, then had errors because the printer was offline and I couldn't complete setup because of instant ink messages on the printer UGH.

Anyway - SOLUTION:  found out that when you unplug the printer (both on the back of the printer and from the outlet) that you can manually move the cartridge carrier and replace the cartridge before plugging it back in.  Wish I had know that earlier - hope that helps anyone else with this issue!

Same with me! The carriage won't move, and I can't get it to print at all until I replace the ink. YET when I hit "replace" nothing happens and the carriage won't move so I can't replace the ink! So frustrating!
